On September 4, 2013, James Comey was sworn in as the seventh director of the FBI.A Yonkers, New York, native, Jim Comey attended the College of William and Mary and the University of Chicago Law School. After law school, Comey returned to New York and joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. There, he took on numerous crimes, most notably Organized Crime in the case of the United States v. John Gambino, et al. Afterwards, Comey became an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, where he prosecuted the high-profile case that followed the 1996 terrorist attack on the U.S. military’s Khobar Towers in Khobar, Saudi Arabia.Comey returned to New York after 9/11 to become the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. At the end of 2003, he was tapped to be the Deputy Attorney General at the Department of Justice (DOJ) under then-U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft and moved to the Washington, D.C. area.Comey left DOJ in 2005 to serve as General Counsel and Senior Vice President at Defense contractor Lockheed Martin. This book was intelligently written. Basically a personal and professional autobiography, I found it appealing from a human aspect as well as informational as to the various workings within the justice system as well as the FBI. I found that I grew to respect Mr Comey more and more as the book progressed, and, as angry as I was at the time of the disclosure re the Clinton emails, I now fully understand the torture of the decision he had to make. I do not see this work as partisan in any way. In fact, quite to the contrary, Mr Comey was true both to his personal standards for integrity as well as to his duties to his jobs and to his country. Sadly, his fate appears to the result of living in a world where integrity appears to be little more than a word in Webster's dictionary. I recommend all to read A Higher Loyalty without bias. There is much to be learned about self respect as well as honor.

Best book I’ve read this year. Period. Superb honest commentary on leadership. Well documented. I wished I’d had this job prior to retiring when I was in a leadership position. Regardless of your feelings on the current political climate - the ethics and leadership component is superb. And the honest, well documented total embarrassment of our current political charade is well documented.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Comey is a great writer. It is a page-turner that both my husband and I could not put down. I thought it would be a boring book about leadership, but it is actually a well-written, informative book detailing several major collisions between American politics and our justice system. Comey gives the inside scoop on his interactions with past presidents and other important political figures while summarizing the major fbi investigations he has worked and/or led. Having seen a few Comey interviews, I was also worried that the best parts of the book had already been discussed by the media. Fortunately, that wasn't a problem at all. There were plenty of fascinating details. In addition, although Comey definitely responds to his critics, he is most critical of himself. It is hard to walk away from this book without appreciating him as a guy capable of honest self-evaluation who can admit and learn from mistakes. That alone is a lesson in leadership and humanity.

I have to say i was surprised of how good Comey writes. He is detailed, he takes you into whatever situation he is talking about. Totally takes you into his stories.I can only imagine the "memos" he wrote! He has oh so many stories, some of them we know a little as were part of the news at one point or another. I finished the book maybe in 5 days?I also realized that all the cristism he got from the press and newscasters for the orange comment was hot air. He does describe him as orange, but so he describes everyone else in each and every story. Thin, old, hair, pale, etc. I think they did not read the book at all.I do recommend the book, and congratulate Comey for being such an entertaining writer. And i thank him for his service.And Lordy, I hope there are tapes! :) and from all that is happening lately.. they probably exist!

I listened to all of the hype about the book, and I assumed it was going to be an assault on Trump (which honestly, I was looking forward to). However, I had no idea that what I really wanted to read was this incredible book. James Comey made me forget all about Donald Trump and reminded me about the importance of honesty and integrity in leadership. He also showed me his own vulnerability and humanity. There is a section in the book (that I won't give away) which caused me to weep for his overwhelming grief. He discussed his short comings, his heroes, his sins, and the importance of leadership in our country. I was completely impressed by his writing, his passion for truth, and his love of country. I hope he writes another book. I would imagine he has a life time's worth of lessons to teach.

J. Comey speaks from the heart as he discusses his family and their life path, which has played a role in his ethical and caring character. His dedicated and wise wife is a true pillar of support. He spells out the incredible leaders and mentors in his life and career, who have influenced and developed his leadership. An incredible ethical public servant, who was done wrong by an out of control unethical idiot. THANK YOU for your dedicated service to our country Mr. Comey!

Minal Hajratwala has written a sweeping yet personable history of her extended family's migration from India to points all over the world.She tells stories about her family members' journeys to Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States. She gives their histories, starting over a hundred years ago, and sets them in the context of the culture and politics of their new homes. Like most of the best history, we see the big picture by starting with the details and the individuals, their struggles and successes.What makes this history unusual is that the characters are the author's own family members, many of whom she visited and interviewed. The book is very thoroughly researched but is written in a conversational style, the way a person would write about their own family.I feel like I know Minal, at least a little, even though I've never met her, and even better, I feel like I've met many members of her broad and interesting family. I'm grateful for her contribution to history and thankful to have read her book.(A brief disclosure. I worked for a short time with the author's brother several years ago and I came to know about the book through him. I have not met the author.)

A wonderful, very well written book. The story of the author's family's dispersion from 5 nearby villages in India to far-flung curves of the globe (Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, US, Canada, UK, South Africa -- that I recall) is great material. But the way she compiled and interwove the stories is what makes the book so worth reading. The author is a journalist (or former journalist) who did a great deal of research to verify the stories she was told (or heard about or read) and to place them in historical, social, and geographical context, and the book is replete with end-notes and bibliography. Her discussion of the Indian diaspora brims with thoughtful observations. Many of her insights apply equally to other ethnic diasporas (e.g., Jews, Chaldeans, Greeks). Still, there are many aspects of the Indian diaspora that would be unusual for other ethnic groups. For example, I recently met a very modern South African professional woman who speaks Hindi, though she is four generations removed from India. Had I not read this book, I would not have appreciated how distinctively Indian this is.

I've waited far too long to post this, perhaps because I had another identity crisis when I sat down to write it. I've written a few "reviews" of writing projects on this blog, all of which have been positive. And I realize that when you are writing 100% positive reviews, you are not so much a reviewer or a critic and more of a promoter.And when I read back through previous Amazon reviews, I see that I am no critic. That's probably because when I love a book enough to write about it, I am not critical. I am in love. I loved Drew Banks's first two novel's and MJ Hahn's amazing podcast. I wrote about them and called what I wrote reviews.But they are not reviews; they are love letters! The Sexy Grammarian is not a critic. She is a teacher. And a lover.So, I now sit with pen in hand (yes, I do draft most of my blog posts in ink) to write a well-deserved love letter to the incredible and beautiful book, Leaving India by Minal Hajratwala.Every family should have a Minal, a member who records the family story with involved passion that can only come from the inside of a family but also sits back and observes, to give us a journalistic, even critical view. She tells the story of her extended family and its scattering of people and how that fits into the greater diaspora from India to all over the world.Minal's writing lilts and then reports, questions and then critiques. She is a historian, a romance writer, a gossip, an academic, and a researcher, all at once. Perhaps that's why her book has been nominated for both a Lambda Literary Award and a California Book Award.At one point there were four copies of this book on my shelf:o one for my cousin, a writer who has plans to write about our familyo one for my mother, who loves to study our family's geneologyo one for my wife, who kept stealing my own copy before I'd finished ito my own treasured copy, purchased from and signed by the author--her inscription encouraged my own writing.But it's the copy on my shelf reserved for my mother that worried me. Before I picked up my copy of Leaving India, I heard that there was some controversy about the "sexy chapter," that critics had complained that Minal snuck some lesbian sex into the pages of her otherwise serious, journalistic endeavor.In spite of my disgust with a literary world that thinks sexy = not serious, I worried about my mother reading the chapter about Minal, the sexy chapter. "Here is a book about family history, Mom. Oh and watch out for the lesbian sex toward the end." But when I read it I knew this story would not be new to Mom. This chapter of lesbian love, laid out like a collection of tiny, precious poems, tells the tale of heartbroken parents with papers in their hands--papers that told them, your daughter has become something you fear.And that story would not isolate my mother but bond her even more deeply to the whole picture of this amazing book. She's been through that, even if she hasn't been exposed to this particular picture of diaspora, of family, and of change.Incidentally, I post this love letter to Leaving India just as Minal prepares to help launch Indivisible, the first anthology of South Asian American poetry. It's one thing to be told that there are Indians in every part of the world, and another to find out how they got there. Hajratwala set out to find her relatives (of which she has scores) and record their stories, and she did it with verve and openness. She's the kind of person you would like to sit next to on a long, boring train ride.

Not really a how to paint book, but lots of solid information on individual colors, mixing, texture, color schemes, etc. It also has paintings from the National Museum of American Art in the Smithsonian Institution as examples. Published in 1983, it's not as glossy as some modern books, but I find it valuable. I bought it because I have another oil painting book by Wendon Blake and he even states that he is trying to give practical information to the aspiring painter. Original retail was $23.50.

A must have! The information is packed in the pages in a way that even 'new to oil' painters can assimilate easily. The only drawback is that while the images of the Masters paintings are in color Wendon's is not - that includes the exercise images too. A book that really helps with color issues.

This is an essential book for a beginning oil painter. Mastering color is complicated business. This book takes you by the hand and leads you to discovery.You do have to do the exercises but if you are serious about learning, it is fun and interesting. This book contains so much useful information. It is a great reference.

The book is a masterwork in the sense of presentation of material and information.The author has a no-nonsense wit and gets right to the point with things it usually takes years of frustration to learn. He makes color part of understanding your art, part of composition and perspective, painterly expression--but explained in the most simple language. He goes into brush strokes, reflected color, properties of paint and in a beautiful way as he shows it through examples of master painters. He shows many paintings and then close-ups in order to see the technique and he tells you what the artist did and how it works.Basically, it is a completely interesting book that will captivate you and you'll lose yourself. It has things you don't find in other books unless you spend a fortune and wade through a tome of useless info to get to a few good points. This book is the real thing and I highly recommend it.
