Miss Clare Remembers and Emily Davis (The Fairacre Series 4 & 8), by Miss Read

In the English village of Fairacre, the retired schoolteachers Dolly Clare and Emily Davis enjoyed a remarkable friendship, as this moving volume reveals. Childhood playmates in Beech Green, they would remain close throughout their long lives, eventually sharing a cottage in their retirement. They felt grief when a village family was lost on the Titanic. They each experienced young love and then heartbreak when the First World War interrupted both of their romances. The triumphs and tragedies of their days are depicted with all the humor, heartbreak, and human warmth for which Miss Read is known, providing a sensitive portrait of life in the country.

The fourth book in the charming Fairacre series, written in 1962, is a departure from the formula. Miss Clare is the retired school teacher we have only seen, up until now, through the eyes of our usual narrator, Miss Read. In book four it is Miss Clare's thoughts and remembrances that tell the story of her long village life.Miss Clare spends the day readying her cottage for a visit from her lifelong friend, Emily Davis, and as the day goes on she finds her thoughts drawn back in time to the first time they met at the little school house as children. Her thoughts then begin to tell the story of a lifetime spent in the village. Starting before her own birth with the meeting and marriage of her parents, the birth of their three children and the making of their little family. The story continues through good times and bad, through numbing grief and the horrors and losses of two wars. Through it all, Miss Clare's calm and sensible demeanor helps her walk through each adventure with quiet fortitude and grace. Like all the Fairacre stories, Miss Clare remembers is a sweet and charming story, told in a quiet narrative style. You can always expect delightful glimpses into a simpler time and a walk through the lifestyle of village life in the early 1900's. This volume is one of the more dramatic and lively stories yet, but still this unassuming style of storytelling isn't for everyone, there is no real attempt at action, or suspense. Certainly there is no torrid romances the way modern day readers think of it. Just simple, quietly told tales.

I have never been disappointed in any book by Miss Read. They are always well written, contain sympathetic characters and delightful stories. Miss Read (actually Mrs. Dora Saint) wrote what I call "quiet books." That is, although there is plenty of action, none of it is ever violent, never profane, never anything but good fun and something one can read at bedtime to quiet the mind. I suppose one could also call the books "village stories," since they all take place in one or another English village, rather like the Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter series by Susan Wittig Albert, or the books of Jan Karon about the little town of Mitford. Delightful, every last one of them.

In today's culture, there is a celebrity consciousness that tends to undervalue traditional values as well as the people who live by them.In Miss Read's books Miss Clare Remembers and Emily Davis, she tells the stories of two women who faced their lives with courage and dignity. Despite searing heartache and loss, they shouldered their responsibilities and did their duty, thereby having a positive effect on many people. If you like stories about the rural life and those who value it, you'll enjoy the stories of Dolly Clare and Emily Davis.

Let me start by saying, if you like Miss Read or if you like sweet books about English village life, you will like this book. These are two books. Miss Clair Remembers, an autobiography of the fictional character Miss Claire and the story told often by others after her death of Miss Claire's friend, Emily Davis. So you get the story of Miss Claire teaching in a small village school and Emily Davis who lived in the big city.If you start here, you will want to read the many books in this series.

Ah- Miss Read, what a perfect way to relax and know that you are going to have a soothing visit. At the same time you will enter the world of an English village, the way I hope they still exist somewhere. Twenty years ago I lived in an English village and the life and reactions of the people were much as Miss Read depicts. These stories take me back to a time I loved and a place where life was a bit less complicated - maybe not to the characters in the story, but certainly less than what seems to surround most of us today. It's the perfect "safe" book to give your mother or someone else who would rather not be entertained with violence. I guess a number of people would consider it an old fashioned read, but then it's nice to have that available

I love this series and I read them for their slowness and joy and hope in the simple things of life. They are relaxing to me because they are innocent books. They bring peace to my mind.

I have been reading Miss Read since the first book I bought probably close to 40 years ago. One of my favorite authors! This are GREAT books.

I love any Miss Read books!

If you are searching for a comprehensive A to Z guide about the gluten-free lifestyle, author Danna Koran provides it in this 2nd edition Dummies book. Easy to understand explanations about Celiac Disease, deciphering food label lingos in order to be well-informed when shopping and how to create menus that are interesting and delicious minus the gluten. Since managing a gluten-free diet is a way of life, not just a once and done thing, this is an excellent reference book to keep on hand.

I've had a recent diagnosis of Gluten Intolerance and I was looking for a good book to teach me what I need to know to avoid wheat. I was completely overwhelmed with all the choices of books on "Gluten Free" living. However, having had excellent luck with other "Dummies" Books, I decided to get this one. I am SO glad I did! This book is totally comprehensive. It covers everything from getting the diagnosis to recognizing covert gluten ingredients to how to change your favorite recipes to make them gluten free and so much more.I expected to need to buy another book or two after this one to get a complete education on gluten free living, but now I don't need to - this book really taught me everything I needed to know.It is kind of scary to find out you have to stop eating wheat for the rest of your life - it can seem so overwhelming because wheat feels like it is in EVERYTHING at times. This book broke it down and made the lifestyle MUCH more managable for me.She also has a really good chapter on dealing with negative feelings regarding this kind of diagnosis. I have not dealt with the negative feelings she describes [my health has improved SO vastly that I can honestly say I don't miss wheat at all!], but I think that chapter would be incredibly helpful for people who ARE struggling with their diagnosis. The other thing I loved about this book is that it is so readable. The author is a great writer - she is witty, she includes little anecdotes from her life to help you understand what she's teaching, and the book is really entertaining to read. I was very afraid that it might be dry and "medical text book" type reading, but it is not at all. It is a fun, enjoyable read.I have already loaned out my copy of this to one gluten intolerant friend and I've purchased a second copy and given it to another friend who was recently diagnosed with Celiac. From now on, this book will be my go-to gift for all friends dealing with any gluten related illness. It is so helpful!Thank you for writing this book Ms. Korn! You have helped me and my family so incredibly much!

Excellent book. Have been gluten free for five years and recommend this to anyone who wants to know where to start on the transition. The author provides insight to where gluten hides under other names beside wheat, rye and barley The author has a great sense of humor!

I am relatively new to a gluten free diet. My doctor suggested gluten free and gave me a list of foods that were allowable but I needed more information. Living Gluten-Free for Dummies is a great educational resource and helped me tremendously. As I have learned gluten is in so many items (and not just foods) so knowing how to read labels and ingredients to look for that mask gluten under another name is very important. This book helps with all of this. Gluten-Free Cooking For... is wonderful! I use this book almost daily. I love the recipes and it has great suggestions for snacks and many other quick solutions so you don't eat something you should avoid. All the recipes I have tried so far have been great.

Excellent book! Great all-around resource for understanding what gluten is and how to avoid it. Recipes, shopping tips, advice on eating out, plus so much more. I thought I'd have to buy several books on how to live gluten-free, but this one book does it all. Highly recommend.

I just found out that I have developed gluten sensitivity and this book helped me understand what that means. It starts with teaching you what gluten is, what it does, how to look for it in foods, and how to manage living without it. Well written, it really helped me to understand what I can and can't eat and how to read labels for those foods not clearly marked. I can now stop moaning about not being able to eat breads and pasta anymore, and learn to make them from scratch using gluten free products. Buying this book first would have saved me hours of internet research into gluten free living.

Don't let the "For Dummies" moniker fool you. Typically, you find so much mis-information online and in other published books relating to gluten-free advice, it's refreshing to read such a well-researched, vibrant, accurate, and, dare I say, inspiring game plan for embarking on a lifelong gluten-free journey. No stone is left unturned, and many myths are dispelled - with an ample dose of wit and humor. Most gluten-free books are clinical, boring, and dry. This one is fun, whimsical, positive, and energetic. You feel like the author is truly optimistic about the gluten-free diet being the key to optimal health. No gf book I've read paints such an accurate, in-depth and rosy picture.

My husband was recently told he has celiac disease & neither one of us knows much about gluten free, this book is very informative & like the title says it's easy to understand, I keep it on my kitchen table & refer to it every day

I wanted information, and have no desire to wade through all the proselytizing to find it. I've given it away and will try to find something else.

Very very good book for skin related

It’s exactly what i needed

The best esthetics boon on the market. Every detail is explained. Great reference book

I got this book quite a while ago now. I go it well before I became an Aesthetician and a Make up Artist. I just wanted to know as much as possible on every new thing when it came up. ow to do different procedures for things and always wanting knowledge.

Easy to understand

Great reference. Great price compared to books in Australia.

I haven't gotten through all of it yet, but what I have read has been well-written and easy to understand.

While this text may be useful to students, Im find it totally unfair to have a text with no answer sheets provided. If anyone knows where the answers could be found I would certainly appreciate a tip on how to find them.

Review

“Don’t Let Your Emotions Run Your Life for Kids is a simple yet comprehensive tool facilitating meaningful dialogue between parents, caregivers, family members, and children for explaining and exploring emotions. The workbook discusses a variety of emotions using language geared towards children, and provides concrete examples of what emotions ‘look’ like while giving children the tools needed to identify and communicate their emotional experiences. The exercises are designed to teach the child using easily understandable concepts and ‘kid friendly,’ concrete exercises to help guide them through each concept. The activities are designed to facilitate an enriched learning experience, uniquely applicable to each child. The workbook is well written, and the authors are clearly compassionate and dedicated to helping children recognize their emotions and how those emotions impact the world around them.”—Julie A. Vandermay, PsyD, MA, forensic neuropsychology resident at Natalis Counseling & Psychology Solutions“Don’t Let Your Emotions Run Your Life for Kids effectively conveys useful information about the challenging emotions children face, and ways for kids to deal with them in language far more accessible than most material available on these topics. As a plus, parents who assist their children in the useful exercises provided in the book may well find themselves picking up helpful tips for managing their own emotions as well!”—Mark Carlson-Ghost, PhD, associate professor at the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University-Twin Cities Campus“Don’t Let Your Emotions Run Your Life for Kids is a great resource for children in that it provides clear explanations to help them gain understanding about what emotions are and why we have them, and it and contains both fun and educational activities to assist them in learning how to express emotions more effectively. Parents will also benefit from this workbook because it provides them with clear, straightforward, age-appropriate language they can use to talk to their children about feelings in a manner that will facilitate an open dialogue and enhance the parent-child relationship.”  —Ilyssa Siegel, PsyD, mental health practitioner at an addiction treatment center“Very well done! I do dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) with adults, and I could easily see the transition to kid-friendly language and concepts without losing any information. I think kids will be able to dive into these concepts quickly and easily. I can see this as being very helpful in a variety of settings.”—Reena Pathak, PsyD, licensed psychologist“Don’t Let Your Emotions Run Your Life for Kids provides an easy-to-understand and effective set of tools to help kids navigate the complexities of emotions they may be struggling with. The tools help kids learn to understand, manage, and express their thoughts and feelings in ways that will help enhance their lives and reduce turmoil they might otherwise experience. These simple yet powerful tools draw from modern-day clinical methods which are helpful in reducing distress and increasing one’s ability to interact with others in meaningful ways.”—Robert Hoppe, PsyD, licensed psychologist“This workbook provides an excellent tool for professionals and parents alike to skillfully empower children to learn to manage difficult emotions through practical and engaging examples and activities.”—Megan Thumann, PsyD, licensed psychologist and mother of four boys

This book is for younger kids. Not teens. They have another book of the same kind but for teens. It’s ojay but my 11 year old said the lessons are too easy and it’s like “for babies”.

I bought this book for one of my pre-teen clients who was struggling with emotional regulation. The activities are age-appropriate and easy to understand, and they provide a great starting point for discussing CBT tools to help manage uncomfortable emotions.

Great layout for kids and easy for them to understand

This book had been a life saver! Must have for youth who are struggling with coping skills!

Bought for a friends grandson he appreciates having this book

Use frequently

I do dbt informed therapy and bought this for a young family member. Does a great job of presenting dbt concepts in a child friendly format. I think it would also work well for adults a with mild IDD.

Really practical and well received with many of my adolescent clients
