John Bogle is legendary. Hearing him in interviews, it really sounds like he can empathize with the small investor. His innovative index mutual funds have been great for legions of investors. This book explains why good asset allocation, low fees, compounded dividends and dollar cost averaging can build a sound portfolio for retirement.

Before digging into the book itself, it is important to recognize the work of John C. Bogle in the financial services industry. As briefly highlighted in the book, Bogle started the Vanguard investment fund to test a thesis put out by a prominent researcher on the merits of "indexing". He created the fund on the idea that investors shouldn't have to pay exorbitant management fees or transaction fees when putting their money away in a fund. The work he has done cannot be matched, and the 500+ pages of this book prove it page after page. That said, I cannot give this book a 5 star rating because in my eyes, it spends far too long discussing a far too simple premise. The premise is straightforward and can be gleamed from the first few pages of reading."On average, investors would be better off to invest in an large cap index fund like the S&P 500 for the long term than any other investment strategy".If you are convinced of this line of reasoning already, this book may not be worth reading cover to cover. Bogle does state near the beginning of the book, "My goal has been to make each chapter a freestanding and indepedent essay on a particular issue". In my opinion, this book is an essential "manual" for personal investment strategy, but does not suffice for a casual weekend read. The text ruminates on the topic of mutual funds to the point where the read feels like the logical arguments are going in circles. Bogle does argue his points well though and backs them up with large amounts of historical data while also injecting his personal wisdom every so often (the true gem of the book). As a millenial who has taken the personal computer revolution for granted, it is tough to appreciate the weight of this book. U.S. mutual funds now hold over $2.5 T of U.S. equity securities compared to the $40 B in 1982, and even more startling, the concept of "indexing" is actually a novel idea still. It was hard for me to grasp the innovation of indexing because I have always found it to be an obvious idea. We have fast computers and lots of stock data, so why not index?Although my demographic (23 years of age) was probably a primary target of this text, I feel that it did not accomplish the task of compelling my thinking enough to read it straight through. Definitely worth a purchase, but I plan to peruse the chapters in random order as I need them rather than sit down and read the book cover to cover.

This is a very, very detailed book.It is like the reference Encyclopedia of Mutual Funds. The 600+ pages cover everything from basic definitions to strategies for investment to include several levels of the economics and math that go with it.On of my favorite things about this booko is that Bogle does not pull any punches. This is not a get rich quick view of funds. It is a treatise and a lifetime of experience condensed down into a readable book. While you can read the book cover to cover, I recommend using it as a reference where you read the book in the sections as you need them.

People say that investing is complex and confusing and that you need to hire a financial advisor to help you on investing your money for a comfortable retirement. After reading this book, I found that much of what you hear from the financial industry is wrong and is designed to confuse the retail investor. The truth of the matter is that investing your money is not complex and that you do not need a financial advisor. If you listen and follow the advise from much of the professional investor class about where you should put your money, you would be making them rich at the expense of your savings. John Bogle is doing us retail investor's much needed truth about how to manage your money and has the roadmap and proof to tell us, what most others in the industry has long kept silent and a secret. The truth to investing is that it is not secret, do it yourself, it is not complex, and don't listen to the advise of professional portfolio managers who are out to take your money while pretending to have your back, they don't because it is at their expense. Go with Bogle's folly, read the book, and follow the wisdom in it, and you will do better than 96% of all funds managed by the portfolio managers.

it's a good book. It's very detailed. However I don't think its a must read for a DIY investor. The basic premises on the book are covered in other investment books. I think the book is more appropriate for people with a career in investment, business and/or accounting. The most interesting part for me was the least useful, which is the story of the beginnings of Vanguard.

Review

Compelling, energetic, [and] highly readable.--Alan NadelOne of the most important books ever on the social construction of the notion that there is a white race. "[I]ntriguing and well researched. This is an important addition to the nascent academic field of whiteness studies, which examines the social construction of whiteness with particular attention to the American experience. It should be read by all historians and anyone with an interest in cultural studies. "Compelling, energetic, [and] highly readable. --Alan Nadel"An insightful and lively exposition from a distinguished scholar. --Linda Gordon"

I have to admit that I was skeptical of such a book and didn't believe it would teach me much that I didn't already know. I have a pretty good background in history, especially western civilization, from classical Greece to modern U.S. history. I have been a skeptic on the subject of race almost since I left high school. But Nell Painter won me over almost from the first page of this remarkable book. She did her homework, and she knows how to tell a story. She shows that notions of race are both ancient and also socially and culturally constructed. She also reveals how this conception of a "white" race emerges and becomes so important in Europe and the U.S. She reveals the silliness of race science but also places it in historical context that helps readers understand why otherwise intelligent individuals might be seduced by such notions as skull measurements, cranial capacity, skin tone, facial features, intellectual capacities, etc. She demonstrates how famous and respected figures likeThomas Carlyle and Ralph Waldo Emerson were seduces by a common desperate desire to be on the superior side of a perceived "racial" and class divide, and how someone like Franz Boas could stray from the received opinions of his day when the evidence became less and less convincing. In short, the book is an education in a subject that many of us thought we knew something about. This really is a fresh look at race and notions of "whiteness" that deserves a wide audience, and it looks like that's what's happening. First you have to understand how something came about before you can really see how truly disturbing and misguided it is. She might have called her book the myth of white people, but that would have given away too much of the payoff of discovering all the foolishness that lies behind the very conception of a "white" race of humans.

The text explains, in detail, American policies and practices in regard to volunteer immigrants from (what I considered) white countries. Nell Painter reveals the deep research she conducted of this history (white people in America) in a way that reads almost like a novel. As such, it allows self-educators to benefit from traceable truth (not opinion) that was previously available only to researchers, academics, or the oral histories of the specific groups discussed.

This is a dense read, and it's important to remain aware that the book is ultimately about whiteness in the US. If you aren't in it for the long haul, don't start it. Even as a lover of history, geography, and politics (all discussed in this book), my mind would get overwhelmed and I'd have to take breaks. Chapter 27 is OVERWHELMINGLY relevant to the last 10 or so years of racisl justice fights, and is certainly still relevant. After that chapter, the last few seem to be a little rushed or incomplete (likely because she is speaking about the present). It ends with looking forward, and assumptions people have made about the future of the United States as it becomes more brown, but doesn't give the concluding feeling that people generally want from a book. This should honestly be treated like a textbook, and be included in curricula.

This careful, scholarly, proBlack book tears up the poison that whiteness inflicts on Black Women's lives. Is painful necesary work in this struggle to remove whiteness, and its genociding, from our daily lives and future.Love

Well-written history of the social construct of race and its impact on throughout our short US history. If you read one book this year... this is the one!

What's most important to know can be summed up in the author's YouTube lecture, 'Why are white people called Caucasians?' She delves into the history of identity more than their travail from antiquity. Which seems to be a more palatable approach for the masses.

Excellent review and new information regarding facts that have set stereotypes and opinions, that have little basis in fact.

Thoughtful and thorough, this is an enlightening look at what white people have wrought.

I love this book! It reminds little girls that princesses are just pretty ladies who sit in castles. Princesses can kick butt as well as any guy. Leia was (and still is) my favorite Star Wars character, and this is a great way to show a kid how great she is. It represents her character extremely well. My daughter has all the "I Am A..." Star Wars Golden Books, and this and "I Am a Droid" are by far the best.

We love this book so much! I have been trying to steer my daughter away from Disney princesses and this was exactly what I was looking for. It's still a princess, but she's a strong, independent princess who helps others as part of her duties as a princess. I would LOVE to see more books with Leia as the main character. And let's not forget some Rey books too! Girls can love Star Wars too!

This book is absolutely adorable. My cousin is pregnant with her first, a girl, and is going overboard with a "princess theme." Everything's pink, Disney everywhere, it's kind of nauseating. I'm slick slipping her this book at the baby shower. But since this stars Princess Leia, it's not at all about being saved by a Prince and wearing fancy dresses. It includes a storyline rife with lines like, "A Princess protects her people. A Princess stands up for what's right. A Princess stands up against bullies," and so on. I love that it celebrates strong feminist themes, and I hope my newest family member learns a lot from it!

I had high expectations for this book and I'm excited to say it lived up to them. Blending together positive messages that young kids can understand with iconic imagery from across the entire series of Star Wars films that parents will surely enjoy, this little book sets a standard on what to expect from a princess. This is a must have for any parent that loves Star Wars or any child that loves princesses.

My 3 year old son is obsessed with Star Wars books. We had the Little Golden book set of books based on the movies. We recently bought the rest. This book has less words than books based on the movies. It is much easier to read at bedtime or as a quick read. For those who are not Star Wars fans, it gives some of the backstory in case you haven't watched the movies. This is also short enough that my one year old will sit through it as well.

I bought this for my nearly-4-year-old for Christmas and she loves it. The story is cute and easy for her to follow and she loves to see the different-looking creatures and discuss who they are and whether she thinks they look like good guys or bad guys. As a mom, I also like how it shows her a different kind of princess that she's used to seeing in movies.

I'm not sure who loves this book more-- my daughter or me! We actually ordered it twice since the first one got wet. There is a laser gun mentioned in a page taken from an Episode 4 scene in case that might bother anyone. We've watched all of the movies so it didn't bother me. I'm so happy that Leia is a Disney Princess now! This book has an empowering message for girls, big and little alike.

Our family is a Star Wars family and our little girl is at an age where we wanted to read to her. This book looked perfect because it shows that princesses are not just about fashion and getting the "perfect man", but to be able to save others as well. I was always a fan of Princess Leia and now my daughter is too. The book is small, but I love it! For those who are interested in Star Wars and want to read to their little ones, or have them read it themselves, this book is perfect! I highly recommend purchasing it and I will be purchasing similar books to these in the future.

My toddler daughter loves the book because it’s a Star Wars book. However as the parent who reads and rereads the book, it is very poorly written. The author is constantly changing the persona. I think they forget if they are writing 1st or 3rd person, or if it’s a book on princess facts. I’ve relinquished the fact that it’s very poorly written and continue to read it. I am hesitant to buy further Golden Books though.

I did not find this book very interesting, and am surprised it even won such a prestigious medal. First, the illustrations are mediocre; the story is also kind of stupid - she's a short, old lady who goes "hehehe" all day and enters some demon world because a dumpling rolled away... to me, it sounds like a buildup to some sort of racist joke told by drunks at a bar. I'm sure this was all acceptable back when it was published, just like blackface was acceptable "performance theater" at one point; but this reminds me of those early illustrations of exaggerated racist stereotypes - like of a short, fat Jew with a big nose, beady eyes, and crazy curls coming out of the sides of their heads... anyway, some might love this book as a classic, but I didn't. As with any review, buy what you like, not what others dislike.

My favorite children's book from when I was growing up in the late 1980s. I give a copy to all my friends when they have a child.

This was one of my son's FAVORITE books when he was a little boy...now that he's 28 and has a son of his own, I just had to purchase it again. I SO wish it came in hard back though as this is a paper back.

This book kids an absolute treasure! My 6 and 8 year old get a kick out of it every time we read it.

It is a book to read to pre/early school children. Kids repeat where is my dumpling over and over.

Such a great book! I love the story of the brave little woman chasing her dumpling and laughing along the way. It was one of my favorite books growing up. As a hapa, I loved there was a story like this where the main character was Japanese. The illustrations are beautiful. I purchased this for a friends new baby, so hopefully his baby will grow up loving the story as much as I did.

Very fun book, the kids love to giggle along with the Funny Little Woman, but I'm not sure getting rich should be the end goal :)

Read this book with my kids when they were little. We enjoyed reading it. So, I bought more to give as gifts.

I wanted a truthful account of the Civil War Underground Railroad---before and after. What I got was just that. I'm from northeast Ohio, on Lake Erie (close) and the book starts out with the Ohio River, how close Cincinnati was to Kentucky, a slave state. I've read only so much so far, but it is compelling, interesting and Ohio was one of the last stops on the URR. I find my state's involvement in the War to be a huge part and quite absorbing. The author is interesting and weaves her words together in a compelling manner. I highly recommend this book for other Civil War enthusiasts. And the URR was up on the surface, not tunnels dug and locomotives underground. If you think that, I have some swamp water in Florida---This is one of the MOST COMPLETE TRUTHFUL TOMES ON THE SUBJECT.

This is such a powerful story of the heroes we've never heard about. The people who built hidden chambers and false bottoms under fireplaces to hide fugitives. The gun battles that happened between conductors on the Underground Railroad and slave catchers. The pastors who were thrown out of their pulpits for daring to call slavery a sin. The college student who was publicly whipped for possession of antislavery pamphlets in Nashville, TN. There's so much more packed into this incredible book. Ann Hagedorm is a strong writer who knows how to weave a story that you can't put down. She makes historical facts come alive as you find yourself cheering for these brave people. This is one of the most well written books on Civil War history and is simply a joy to absorb.

Ann Hagedorn did an excellent job of research for Beyond the River. It is clearly written and well presented. I ordered it because my ancestors were personally involved in the abolitionist movement in Ohio and other places. I found many accounts in her book of my great-grandfathers and their work near Ripley, and Sardinia. I thank her and you for making it available.

This is a powerful story . . . providing much need understanding and insight into the foundations of slavery, the underground railroad and the abolitionist movement. Read it! 2 Thumbs Up.

By reaching back to pre-Civil War newspapers, letters and court documents, Hagedorn paints a vivid picture of what it felt like living on the knife edge between slavery and freedom. She makes a reader actually understand the bravery of these Ohio abolitionists by showing us their daily lives, and what it was like to risk your life to help another person to freedom. Once I got into the story, I could not stop reading this compelling history, and I'm usually a reader of fiction rather than non-fiction. Hagedorn's gift for research is matched only by her ability to weave those facts into a fascinating story of these people, this town and a momentous era in our nation's history.

If you are interested in the Underground Railroad from an insider's perspective this is a great book! The history between Kentucky and Ohio interlaced throughout the book is revealing and even astounding. The moral conviction and bravery of those who risked it all to keep the railroad going is truly what has made our country free.

I love this book. Its true and very interesting

This is a well told story of the brave men and women who saved the lives of an untold amount of people. This was done at a time when if caught you faced death. It is a history that should be read by all. Thank you.
