my granddaughter wanted this book for her birthday

Hannah is locked up, Four walls, one window, one door but no way out. She is " A Danger to Herself and Others" , has been deemed so by a doctor , and must stay in the institution until she is evaluated and has an opportunity to explain herself in court. She knows she doesn't belong here, it was all an accident, a mistake, her roommate fell, that's all., and once she convinces the therapist, and the judge, she'll be able to go back to her real life, surviving her senior year in high school and preparing for college. Isolated and angry, she is not at all welcoming to Lucy, the new girl who shares her room at the institution, but soon she is using her charm and persuasive skills to make a new best friend, one who may be able to help her get what she wants- her freedom. This is an excellent contemporary YA book, with great, if unlikeable characters, especially the narrator Hannah, who is the definition of an unreliable narrator, ready to spin every story to her own advantage , determined to make everyone like her, and completely unwilling to take responsibility for anything . The claustrophobic setting really adds to the feeling of tension and isolation that permeates the book, almost all of the story takes place within the institution, with some flashbacks to the events that led to Hannah ending up there , and the author does an incredible job of portraying how trapped Hannah feels, almost to the point that I started to feel a little uncomfortable while reading. It's very difficult to say much more without spoiling the book , and it would be a shame to do that, as it is easily one of the best books I have read in quite some time. It's powerful, tense, surprising, uncomfortable and at times heartbreaking ,and I cannot recommend it highly enough.I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.

A Danger to Herself and Others by Alyssa B. Sheinmel is an intriguing young adult novel.Seventeen year old Hannah Gold is certain she has been placed in a mental institution by mistake. She had nothing to do with her roommate and friend Agnes Smith’s accidental fall out of a window. But Agnes’ parents are convinced she is guilty of harming their daughter, so a judge orders Hannah into an institution for further evaluation. At first, Hannah refuses to discuss anything of value with her therapist, Dr. Lightfoot. However, the arrival of her roommate Lucy Quintana is a turning point for Hannah as she finally realizes that in order to earn “privileges”, she has to be honest with Dr. Lightfoot. With Hannah divulging the events that occurred in the weeks preceding Agnes’s accident, Dr. Lightfoot makes a shocking diagnosis that completely upends Hannah’s view of herself. And with the hearing into her role in what happened to Agnes and Hannah’s reunion with her parents fast approaching, is she prepared for how everyone will react to her unexpected diagnosis?Hannah is an extremely intelligent, high achieving only child. Her parents have always treated her as an adult, so she is quite mature and very composed. Hannah is very fixated on not falling behind in school but Dr. Lightfoot wants her to concentrate on her therapy. Initially, Hannah is positive that she did not harm Agnes, but after she is placed under observation, self-doubts begin to creep in. But why would she have wanted to harm her best friend?Lucy’s arrival provides Hannah with a distraction from her own problems. The two girls hit it off fairly quickly and they are soon swapping stories and finding ways to pass the time. Once Hannah realizes Lucy has earned privileges that provide her with a modicum of freedom, she becomes more open with Dr. Lightfoot. But will her gradual self-awareness prepare Hannah for the doctor’s diagnosis?A Danger to Herself and Others is a thought-provoking young adult novel with a somewhat unreliable narrator. The majority of the story takes place mainly in Hannah’s room at the institution so it is easy for readers to empathize with her as she tries to come to terms with her current situation. Despite a bit of repetition, the storyline is interesting and the characters are relatively well-developed. Hannah comes across as a typical teenager, so Dr. Lightfoot’s diagnosis will catch readers off guard. Alyssa B. Sheinmel deftly handles the subject of mental illness with sensitivity and provides insight into a misunderstood disease. An engaging young adult novel that I recommend to older teen and adult readers.I received a complimentary copy for review.

It's really difficult to write a spoiler free review of this book, so rather than focus on the story elements I'm going to focus on my thoughts and feelings as a reader.First, could it be any creepier? I love the unreliable narrator aspect - and I've rarely seen it executed this well. Hannah is very easy for me to connect and sympathize with. She has a lot of anxiety and coping mechanisms in place throughout the book that honestly seem pretty reasonable. Counting steps? Sure. Not hurting anyone by counting steps. I think that's why I was so blown away by the book. We see everything through Hannah's perspective and she's a worthy narrator. The masterful storytelling is something that has me really excited to share "A Danger to Herself and Others" with my readers. April Henry fans will devour this book. Heck, I would read it again! (And I'm known for NOT re-reading books.) It's suspenseful, nothing comes out of left field without justification, and just...beautiful. Beautifully written. Finally, that ending... I wanted to pull Hannah to me and hug her myself. Her parents were so distant and aloof that I could barely stand it. The author doesn't cave to my need to know Hannah is going to be alright. She lets it dangle in front of me without succumbing to the trend to put a pretty bow on every ending - especially when dealing with mental illness. I am thrilled that this book is in my library's collection and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

If giving stars refers to how much you LIKE a book, it is very hard to give stars here. Solentiname is a fascinating document and this is a very good, readable translation; however, while his book raises an abundance of questions, Cardenal himself falls a long way short in his understanding of the gospel; indeed, he specifically rejects key historical Christian doctrines, notably the redemptive death of Jesus and the resurrection. However he does come well prepared in terms of learning to guide his unlearned friends in their comments on the gospels, and there is much of great interest in the people's responses; they are often very insightful. My two abiding memories of the book are these: 1. There is a discussion about an American preacher on the radio in Managua who talks 'very sweetly' about 'being saved' - but does this touch people's real needs? (it doesn't seem to.) What does the 'gospel', the 'good news' really mean in Central America? 2. Cardenal constantly pushes the discussion away from spiritual need to inveighing against social injustice, while at least some of the campesino commentators are more interested in Jesus. In the end he seems to support the violent overthrow of the corrupt Nicaraguan government, and his outlook actually seems ( I would need to check this properly) implicated in sending young men to violent deaths. In summary, very important issues are raised and, particularly when Cardenal does not push discussion of Bible passages in his personal direction too much, the people have much to say.

I almost let this book stay on the shelf. What a mistake that would have been! I shall be reading it for years. It is the discussion by simple people of gospel passages. The "characters" in the gospel passages were simple people. We tend to forget that and in the process often miss the message. Here's what William had to say about the Our Father: We pray to God for his name to be holy, and it's up to us to make his name holy. We pray for his kingdom to come, and it's up to us to build it. We pray that his will be done on earth, and it's up to us to do his will. We pray to him for bread, and it's up to us to make it and share it We pray to him for forgiveness, and it's up to us to forgive. We pray not to fall into evil, and it's up to us to escape from it.Ernesto Cardenal provides solid biblical scholarship to the discussion, and he weaves the comments together with sensitivity. He is, after all, a poet.

I have read in this book, not yet all parts. When I pick it up I read the section that appeals to me at the moment. The exploration of meaning by the campensinos led by Cardenal is eye opening and thought provoking. Anyone interested in reading the Bible while trying to understand what it can mean for different audiences should definitely read this book. Especially, if you are interested in liberation theology, you will find this rich and rewarding and putting into concrete lives things that may have seemed kind of abstract. So, maybe it should have 5 stars.

Love the reflections from within the Solentiname community.

This book was recommended to me as one that widens the perspective of insight and the understanding of the New Testament. It does widen the perspective, but only within the confines of the traditional and rather mystical beliefs that accompany Christianity. It invites for similar work to be done in the wider perspective of humanism and human consciousness.

I am delighted to see this book back in print. The Gospel in Solentiname helps us re-read the Gospels through the eyes of Nicaraguan peasants. Their observations may come as a shock to those reading the same texts in a affluent suburban context. Rather than be dismissive or critical of these perceptions of the Gospel narratives, we should remember that Scripture was written from the perspective of the poor and the oppressed, and tells the story of a God who acts on their behalf. While liberation theology (like any theology) is not without its shortcomings, it is an important voice for the Church to hear. A wonderful new edition, containing wonderful art to go along with wonderful words.

From a theological point of view, there is very little merit. NEVERTHELESS, Gutierrez, is HIGHLY deceitful about his secular political leanings.Marxism IS the theological lens through which Liberation Theology is read. Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI are to be commended for their condemnation of Gutierrez, along with Leonardo Boff, Ernesto Cardenal and Jon Sobrino. Castro, the Sandanistas and Hugo Chavez RAPED their nations' economies. The Nicaraguans and Venezuelans CANNOT now blame America for their continued economic disasters. Now, that diplomatic relations with Cuba are being restored, ONCE AGAIN it will be demonstrated that ONLY AMERICAN free enterprise will bring prosperity to the Cuban masses. The MOST prosperous Latin American nations ( Brazil, Argentina, etc) with the MOST free trade.NONE of these priests will own up to the reality that traditional Iberian Catholicism brought feudalism to the southern hemisphere. Also, the totally socially irresponsible opposition to contraception by the Catholic hierarchy continues to impoverish the masses! ---Check out The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism by Michael Novak. ONLY American economic and political principles based on the Calvinist Puritan perspective brings what is BEST for all.

It is a good and informative book, if you are someone who needs to escape from Scientology but I never was. I just have an interest in reading about it

It's not a bad read, but not one that I will read over and over gain. There was some information that was useful, especially for someone who may be thinking of leaving the church. Someone like me who left the church in 2004, and who has followed its implosion very closely, there really weren't many new revelations, a couple here and there. I hope it does serve its purpose and gets people to leave organized Scientology under Daid Miscavige, I would probably recommend the book to those thinking of leaving the church, or freshly out, but not to people who are critics of the whole subject of Scientology.

You don't need to be a Scientology person to buy this book: I bought it by mistake because I was curious from the documentary 'Going Clear', and Marty Rathburn wrote another intriguing book on the subject. I am so glad I did since it had all sorts of weirdly 'in crowd' info about the illusive much-aligned "religion" that made all the controversy sensical. How it became what it is today. Fascinating.

After finding Marty Rathbun's blog it led me to an awakening. Being a somewhat older scientologist his book illuminated the changes that sometimes occur when you are too close to a situation. The book showed the changes in the "church" under a power vacuum that occured after L Ron Hubbards death. The book also pried the philosophy away from that of the cult; the original intention of LRH and the greed and mismanagement of David Miscavige. This book illuminated the addage those that do not learn the past are doomed to repeat it. The Luthern Reformation and the necessity of circumstances that led to the independant movement's split, the want of purity of source materials to be available to the masses are given as examples where by many a religeon can and was usurped now and in the past . The differences between the "Indies" (independant scientologists practicing outside a traditional brick and morter structure)and the dead church (Church of $cientology Inc.) are well laid out with a comfortable reading style. Finally this book presents a glimpse of a body of work that which a man spent decades to perfect to help people. Yes we are all fallible that is the human condition but the works of man are spiritual. Read the book and you be the judge!

This shows the levels to which management has sunk during Marty's time with the group. The earlier times, before Marty, are painted with a halo which did not exist. I was there. I know.

Mark Rathbun clearly delineates why you should read this book in the opening chapter, speaking straight from the words of L. Ron Hubbard,"Inspection of something without fear will certainly bring you to any existing truths about that thing... And the odd part of it is that once you know the truth of something it can't bite..."Later on Rathbun states in his book,"Now, if this is all too unnerving and uncomfortable, you are perfectly free to drop this book right now and try real hard to forget you ever picked it up. Or, you can do as Ron advised and brace yourself up to inspect the truth without fear."No words out of my mouth can better explain why any Scientologist and anyone generally interested in the subject - for or against it - should read this book. It will answer why the Church of Scientology is what it is today with no grey zones left behind. It will also give you the truth of what L Ron Hubbard intended with the religious applied philosophy he created as it is, in his own words - some of which can no longer be found in the material issued by the Church of Scientology as they consider the founder's own words and intents to be "inconvenient" for their own not so pure ends.Any Scientologists will find this book easy to read but they are also used to the jargon and nomenclature. If there was one thing that would improve this book, at the least from the aspect of a non-Scientologist reading it, it would be to better define the jargon as it is a bit hard for an "outsider" to fully grasp. But I believe the information is fascinating and revealing enough whether you hate Scientology or is interested in it, to cope with the jargon and have a fairly short, but condensed and very interesting read.

Despite having followed Mr Rsthbun's blog for the past 3 yearsand learning many things doing that, this book still held my attention riveted on every page; it is carefully researched and well-written. Some might find it hard to believe, but I can vouch for many instances described as it filtered down to Middle Management levels where I worked 2001-2007 and at the FSO from 1986-early 2001, 4 of those years as Debbie Cook's personal Secretary. This book is factual and accurate, a 'must-read" for those betrayed by the illegal reign of David Miscavige.O000

Rathbun is right on in his analysis of how current CoS "management" practices have turned Hubbard's wonderful original tech into a cult nightmare of brainwashing and creating robots of its loyal practitioners. Every detail of the original tech has been compared to current tech usage, and I am more than ever convinced that Rathbun is telling it just like it is.

I was introduced to the Sandler Sales System by Dave back in the 90's. It totally changed my life. But Sandler can be difficult to learn and difficult to implement. As my career progressed I moved into sales management and needed a system that was easy to implement and understand. But, it still had to work. And work well. That's when I went back to my roots so to speak. I found that Dave had taken all his experience and expertise and had presented them in a new sales system of his own creation. Baseline Selling. It had everything I was used to and everything I wanted ..... but it was easy to implement and understand. Fast forward several years later and Baseline Selling is the only system I use. Every sales rep who goes thru here learns it. They are better sales reps for it. My team has never missed quota. We all speak the same language and move our suspects around the base path similarly. If I could give this 10 stars I would. Buy it and the workbook. You'll be glad you did.

If you are someone whose primary profession is not in sales (e.g. small business owner), buy this book. If your sales pipeline isn't full, if you're not converting enough sales calls into customers, buy this book. If you can't document or draw your sales process from end to end, buy this book.Baseline Selling is the only book I've found that doesn't assume you already have a business to business sales process. It starts with the head trash that is a barrier to effective sales, moves into effective prospecting and takes you all the way through to the close, providing a framework and a repeatable process. As a business coach, what I find is that my clients who don't close enough business have these issues:==> They believe that they can get enough referrals through networking that they are never going to have to make a cold call, despite the insurmountable evidence to the contrary. In other words, they are in denial about having to make cold or lukewarm calls.==> They create busy work to avoid sales (a good space for me as business coach)==> They have more than one of the 7 psychological barriers to sales that this book addresses (another good space for me as a business coach)==> There's a skills gap. They don't know how to prospect. They don't know how to make a cold call less cold. They don't know what to do to get the appointment. If they get the appointment, they don't know what to do in the appointment to move it along to closed business.Baseline Selling addresses all of these and more. I will be providing this as a resource for my clients as well as refining my own process.Thank you, Dave Kurlan, for creating this resource.

As a sales professional and coach, I read a lot of books and invest in some way in my own professional development every year. Recently I purchased a copy of Baseline Selling by Dave Kurlan to complement a HubSpot partner sales training course and coaching session.I'm pleased to provide an unsolicited recommendation and review of this book as it offers a simple, straightforward way of managing the sales cycle based on a metaphor of the game of baseball and includes some powerful techniques that you can use straight out of the book to help level the playing field with buyers.A common fault many sales people make is to uncover a prospect need, and then rush to the close without "covering the bases" - in this book you'll learn that to score a home-run (a sale), you have to cover all the bases and the more at-bats you make, the more sales you'll make....particularly important for those of us prone to bouts of call reluctanceWhat is different about Baseline Selling from a lot of other sales training books is that it is tightly coupled with a sales psychology assessment from Kurlan's Objective Management Group that comprehensively assesses the critical aspects of individual beliefs and behaviour that impact sales performance.A truth I have learned and experienced in working with individuals and in my own selling assessment is that you have look your own weaknesses in the eye, understand them and their impact on your behaviour and results when face-face with buyers, then practice ways of overcoming them and resolve to adopt different behaviour for lasting change - and real results to occur.Kurlan started selling door to door more than 30 years ago and he is a student of the game...of baseball and selling and his references to classic selling texts are of value. What I found most useful apart from selling psychology assessment were the techniques immediately applicable to any selling profession including; * "Positioning statements" - a sure fire way of getting engagement when the buyer picks up the phone * Techniques for engaging the intellectual buyer who already has what you sell and for differentiating in a commodity sell. * Rules for unpacking symptoms from problems and reaction and consequences and how to uncouple cause from effect. * The "Infield Why Rule" - the practice of asking why until you get to root cause * The "Inoffensive Close" - real gem and it works. * The "Suicide Squeeze" for overcoming resistance to changeWell worth the $15.14 and highly recommended.Full review at [...]

I found this book very helpful in establishing a common language and simple approach for our sales team to use. We are a small company with a few sales people and we needed a simple way to manage our pipeline and communicate status to company management. We leveraged the concepts from this book to update our CRM and we now follow the baseline selling approach. It works well for us and I would recommend this to others that want to get a handle on their sales processes and establish a common language and sales practice.

I have read many books on selling and management and found this to be very entertaining. The concepts were very clear and easy to follow. Keep in mind all of our sales companies differ on our approach, however Dave Kurlan puts a spin on the selling process that can be grasped by all industries. We all want to dominate the marketplace, but you should read this book and follow the proper steps. I highly recommend this book.PS: They have a workbook available, which I thought was a great addition to the book so you can put the concepts into practice.William Capelle - Vice PresidentAmerican Pride Industrial Equipment and ServicesGreen Bay, WI

Review

“An incredible true story . . . Weaving a tale somewhere between a travelogue and a history lesson, Buck traces the iconic path literally and figuratively as he re-creates the great migration with his brother and a Jack Russell terrier.” —Entertainment Weekly“Excellent . . . An amazing cross-country journey . . . Rinker and Nick Buck’s conquest of the trail, the achievement of a lifetime, makes for a real nonfiction thriller, an account that keeps you turning the pages because you can’t conceive how the protagonists will make it through the enormous real-life obstacles confronting them.” —Ian Frazier, The New York Review of Books“Enchanting . . . Interspersed with the story of his westward journey, Mr. Buck entertains and enlightens with discourses on American history and culture. . . . He has delivered us a book filled with so much love—for mules, for his brother, for America itself. . . . Long before Oregon, Rinker Buck has convinced us that the best way to see America is from the seat of a covered wagon.” —Gregory Crouch, The Wall Street Journal“Absorbing . . . The many layers in The Oregon Trail are linked by Mr. Buck’s voice, which is alert and unpretentious in a manner that put me in mind of Bill Bryson’s comic tone in A Walk in the Woods. . . . He’s good company on the page, and you root for him. . . . He’s particularly winning on how, as he puts it, ‘the vaudeville of American life was acted out on the trail.’ . . . This shaggy pilgrimage describes a form of happiness sought, and happiness found.” —Dwight Garner, The New York Times“Awe-inspiring . . . Charming, big-hearted, impassioned, and a lot of fun to read . . . If Buck doesn’t quite make you want to hitch up your own wagon, his rapturous account will still leave you daydreaming and hungry to see this land.” —The Boston Globe“A remarkable saga . . . Thanks to Buck’s utterly engaging voice, infectious enthusiasm, unquenchable curiosity, dogged determination and especially his ability to convey the interaction of two brothers (and three mules), all of whom pull together despite their strong but profoundly different personalities, the saga becomes nothing short of irresistible. . . . This tale of brotherhood, persistence and daring so snares the emotions that it becomes a tear-jerker at its close.” —Rosemary Herbert, Minneapolis Star Tribune“A laugh-out-loud masterpiece . . . Alternately harrowing and exhilarating . . . The book is an unremitting delight.” —Willamette Week“Interwoven in Buck’s adventure tale is a fascinating history of the development of the trail, its heyday, and the colorful characters that made the journey. . . . Whether their primary interest is American history, adventure travel or a captivating memoir, readers are sure to be delighted by this humorous and entertaining story that allows us to believe that Walter Mitty–like fantasies can indeed come true.” —Associated Press“A quintessential American story . . . The Oregon Trail attains its considerable narrative power by interweaving pioneer history with Rinker-and-Nick-and-mules interpersonal strife with poignant memories of the author’s father, who took his own family on a covered wagon journey through New Jersey and Pennsylvania in 1958. . . . This makes The Oregon Trail a rare and effective work of history—the trail stories of the Buck brothers bring humor and drama, and the pioneer biographies supply a context that makes every other aspect of the book snap into sharp relief. . . . The experience of The Oregon Trail stands squarely opposite much of what is modern—it’s slow travel with poor communication, it places struggle before comfort, and it represents a connection with history rather than a search for the newest of the new. In that sense, you’d think the book would be slow-paced and fusty, but it’s really something else: raw, visceral, and often laugh-out-loud funny. For anyone who has ever dreamed of seeing America slowly from the back of a wagon, The Oregon Trail is a vicarious thrill.” —James Norton, Christian Science Monitor“A trip back in time . . . Buck brings the land to life in a richly researched book that draws heavily from journals kept by the pioneers and their memoirs. . . . His exploration of America and himself is a joy to read.” —USA Today (4 out of 4 stars)

Rinker (the author) and his brother decided on a whim to build a covered wagon, buy a set of mules to pull it, and head out on the Oregon Trail. They started In Missouri and travelled through Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon to get there - over 2000 miles. They essentially traced the route the settlers took, over 400,000 of them made the trip in the middle of the 1800's.The book consists of several things - the story of the trip I great detail, ruminations about Rinker's father and how he made him who he was, and passages about the West. These included, among others, information about the importance of mules, how the wagon business prospered as a result of the Trail, the impact of the trail on the Native American population, and how the Mormons (LDS) affected the trail and its history. In the beginning the sheer amount of information is a bit off-putting. After the first few chapters are complete it sort of becomes part of the scenery and blends in. Additionally he and his brother become humanized and there is often a warm feeling present. They actually do make it after making their way through many hair-raising adventures. All of those are told with a breathless spirit that adds to the interest. If you have an interest in the West and how it came to be, you will enjoy this wonderful book.

Rinker Buck is hilarious. I was fortunate enough listen to him at a local library and it was one of the best author talks I've attended. There's a little bit of everything in here from American history that's all but been forgotten to why you should sleep next to a pile of manure. What else do you need?

I'd heard about the Oregon Trail, but didn't really know much about it. I bought this book at the suggestion of a friend. There are many books on the subject, old and newer. This one is current and informative, entertaining and a picture of the changes in the trail which was at its height in the 1840's. Obviously, Buck and his brother had very different problems than the original pioneers. That's why I decided to first read a first hand experience written by Francis Parkman in around 1845. I'm glad I did and I'd suggest that to anyone reading this recent account. Both old and new books are easy reads and excellent glimpses into an important part of American history. The newer book however might appeal to a man or someone more into the technicalities of wagon construction, mule harnesses, etc., but this doesn't take away from the relationships of people on the trail or that of the two brothers. Both good reads!

I had seen the writer on a TV show and ordered the book immediately. It was quite an epic journey of two totally different brothers who set out on a journey to trace the steps of so many pioneers who had traversed this trip across unknown territory. I was amazed that they were still able to find much of the original trail, especially through the mountains! Loved how Rinker was able to weave his own personal story/relationship with his father as he and his brother traveled. They had many interesting experiences with some colorful people who helped them along their trip. The ONLY couple who were awful to them, I hope were remorseful about their attitudes, especially when they see their names in print! It is a really, really good book and highly recommended--some strong language between the brothers! Loved that the mules have a good home together after all that travel!

This is a non fiction narrative primarily about two brothers taking a three mule team, covered wagon across the historical Oregon Trail. The narrative has a popular style flow and is easily read. There is a lot of information about the Oregon Trail. Personally, I found it very instructional. As an amateur history student, I probably doubled my personal knowledge about The Oregon Trail by carefully reading this work. The author also includes a good deal of personal stories insights about his own life that I found very interesting.I closely followed the progress of the trip as described. I used maps and took notes. I enjoyed that very much. I read additional articles about the various locations. I found the entire exercise very illuminating. I plan on following the Oregon Trail as best I can on highways this fall. The author often left the highways with his covered wagon. The author also shares his personal views on subjects such as religion. He makes it clear he is an atheist. That is all well and good but at times I found his lectures tiresome. After all there is a reason that the word "faith" exists and there is a reason we each know what it means and how it feels. In the end, Atheism is still a faith based belief system. Speaking for myself, that was probably the part of this otherwise fine work that I liked the least. The author also went on a brief tirade against law enforcement. I am not sure that was necessary. The outburst was not related to this adventure. The author's experience during the trip with law enforcement seemed all positive. In the event one reads this fine work and enjoys it as I did, by coincidence, a friend recommended to me another book that I also enjoyed and is of a similar format, except it is about a motorcycle trip. The name of the book is "The Old Man And The Harley" by John J. Newkirk.Thank You...

I loved this book! Buck has a distinctive voice and persona, and even though I disagree with plenty of his political views and other assessments, I enjoyed his take on life as he crossed the Oregon Trail. I've always been fascinated by the trail, and I savored every page. "I believe in crazyass passion... My corporeal self would be driving miles across the plains, but it was crazyass passion that would deliver me to the trail." I'm delighted that passion did indeed deliver Buck to the trail and that, through his book, he took me along for the ride.
