Into the Black: The Extraordinary Untold Story of the First Flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia and the Astronauts Who Flew Her, by Rowland White

Review

“Beautifully researched and written, Into The Black tells the true, complete story of the Space Shuttle better than it’s ever been told before.” (Col. Chris Hadfield, astronaut, author, Space Station commander)"An absolutely terrific look into the birth of the Space Shuttle! Into the Black expertly captures, as never before, a history that spans decades, Cold War tensions, bureaucratic infighting and a multitude of seemingly impossible engineering challenges. But it’s much more than merely the cold facts of how the nuts and bolts all came together. It’s about the people…the men, women, astronauts, engineers, managers, and contractors who had the vision, faith in themselves and sheer guts to believe the impossible could be done; that a reusable, manned, winged craft could be built to routinely fly to and from earth orbit. There are stories of courage and heart-accelerating fear in these pages that even I, as an astronaut, was unaware of." (R. Mike Mullane, NASA Astronaut (Ret.), USAF Col., (Ret.), author of Riding Rockets)"An unforgettable book, one destined to become a classic in the emerging field of space history. Moving effortlessly from planning meetings in obscure offices within NASA, the Pentagon, and industry to the unforgiving environment of high-risk flight test and flight into space, this book traces a remarkable journey and, along the way, introduces his readers to a courageous group of far-seeing engineers and astronauts whose bold vision and tenacious work gave humanity its first reusable space transportation system." (Dr. Richard P. Hallion, Senior Adviser for Air and Space Issues at the Pentagon, author of On the Frontier)“Brilliantly revealed, Into the Black is the finely tuned true story of the first flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Rowland White has magnificently laid bare the unknown dangers and unseen hazards of that first mission. He has also given us an amazing insight into a world of science and engineering, the victories and defeats, for the first time. It’s the perfect tale that educates as it entertains. Once read, not forgotten.” (Clive Cussler)“Into the Black isn’t just spectacularly researched, it’s told like a thriller, unfolding the edge-of-death tale of the Space Shuttle Columbia’s maiden voyage in riveting fashion. Rowland White performs a rare feat here, stitching together comprehensive research—countless interviews, declassified files, flight documents—into a tale of courage and daring as streamlined and elegant as the aircraft herself. Buckle in and hold on tight—this thing's got jet propulsion.” (Gregg Hurwitz, author of Orphan X)“Rowland White’s account of Columbia’s inaugural flight in 1981,and all the preparations that led up to it, could not be a more timely reminder of what it takes to design, launch and fly a complex manned space vehicle. White’s research is thorough, his writing style is superb, and he has a gripping and fresh story to tell. This is a genuine ‘must-have’ book for anyone fascinated by the sharp end of space flight.”' (Piers Bizony, author of Starman, The Space Shuttle, and The Making of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’)"This remarkable book describes the final (and unpublished) chapter in the 'Race to the Moon'! Between 1961 and 1963, four groups of astronauts were selected by the USA -- three groups were comprised of those pilots who were assigned to NASA and were highly publicized as men who explored the Moon. The fourth group disappeared into the “black” world of the CIA, the NRO, and the Top Secret Air Force“Manned Orbiting Laboratory.” This is the exciting first-told story of these exceptional pilots who only became known publicly during the development and first flights of the Space Shuttle – flights into the real Black of Space." (Dave Scott, Commander, Apollo 15) “Centuries from now the space shuttle program will be regarded as mankind's first mighty leap into space, not in a rowboat, but in a truly useful spaceship. White tells it as the great, magnificent adventure it was. A superb book.” (Stephen Coonts)“An extraordinary, carefully researched, tale of the evolution of America’s space program. White has unearthed a treasure trove of formerly highly classified facts and combined them with an insightful look at the people who developed and flew America’s early human spacecraft and the first Space Shuttle flight.” (Hugh Harris, former Director of Public Affairs for NASA's Kennedy Space Center and Voice of Space Shuttle Launch Control for STS-1)“Into the Black told me stuff I never knew before – and I worked at NASA for 30 years." (Michael Foale, former Astronaut and International Space Station Commander)

Excellent history about how the Space Transportation System (Shuttle) was created as a follow-up to the Apollo Program. This isn't a technical history but White provides plenty of pertinent details on the challenges faced in building a reusable shuttle under tight budget constraints. White also digs deeper into the connection between the Air Force and the Shuttle Program in the area of design and with the astronauts who migrated from the canceled Manned Orbiting Laboratory over to NASA. These men helped design, test and fly the shuttle through its early years. White also provides some insight on the political side detailing the thought process and support from the Nixon and Carter Administrations. White writes this fascinating history in such a manner that makes it feel more like a Cold War novel than a dry technical story about machines. I started reading it and was so caught up in White's engaging narrative that I stayed up until 4 in the morning to finish it. This is the way history should be written for the general audience. White nailed the facts while making this a story about the amazingly talented and driven people who made the Shuttle a reality.

Excellent. If you love flying, or space subjects, or the Shuttle, or the last quarter of the 20th century, you'll enjoy Into The Black. Written with authority by a man who love flying, the book details (and it is detailed) the intricacies of building Earth's first reusable spacecraft system, a historical journey off planet which heralded the arrival of the Space Age as a viable, doable concept. Even if you followed the newspapers and TV coverage of the entire Shuttle era, you never knew much of what really went on behind the scenes of one of civilization's crowning achievements. This book is a wonderful read and an exciting reveal of the Shuttle and it's political backdrop, much of which remained under wraps until now.

We aerospace enthusiasts have all read most of the details of the Space Shuttle. This book goes beyond. The author has used a number of recently declassified documents to portray the true story of how the Shuttle program actually went from idealistic dreaming, to reality, to production, and then to actual flight.I enjoyed the whole thing. The authors portrayal of the astronauts involved is fascinating.

If you want a look at the black world and connection to the shuttle program, then you need to read into the black. Lots of wonderful information here. Will make you proud of NASA, air force and the not. Real good look at what it took to make projects work. Lot of great people in the service of the it country. Once you start book, you have to finish it before putting it down. Mr white did a great job on this book. Thanks!!!!

This is really the first book that I have read about the begining and development of the STS, culminating with the launch of STS-1. It was well written and engaged you with its various people that were involved. Only dipped a little with some of the political battles in its creation. Stayed mostly on the engineering and operational side. The only other books that I have seen on this topic is the NASA Mission Reports.

Excellent book about the development of the Space Shuttle and the first flight of the Columbia.I thought that I knew everything about the Shuttle program. This book has information which I didn't know.Just get it.In closing, though, it is sad that the loss of the Columbia in 2003 led to the end of the Shuttle program and left us dependent upon the Russians for manned access to space. The Shuttle fleet was retired too early, as the Orbiters each had about two thirds of their designed life left (the STS was designed to be reusable for at least 100 flight's per Orbiter. Each Orbiter averaged only 30-odd missions. There was no reason to end the program early!)

This is one great book. It's a history book with tons of adventure woven in. You get a real sense for the test pilots turned astronauts and the colossal achievement building and flying the space shuttle was. From her bleeding edge main engines to airplane spaceships for the 1930s, this is a marvelous piece of romanticism with something for all dreamers.

This book was a joy to read. I have an interest in flight as a pilot and space flight is an easy place to find amazement and excitement. Mr. White made this historical review into a riveting story that was stranger than fiction. While not as "glamorous" as Apollo 13, this was no less exciting and filled with a willingness to overcome obstacles well before the first flight even occurred. If you're interested in the Space Shuttle program, this is THE book to start with.If only all books written on history could be done as deftly, we'd all be historians!

This book was very easy to read and understand. We have two boys and my husband has primarily boys on his side. We desperately wanted a girl so we used the Shettles method with some dietary adjustments from the Gender Diet and just found out we are having a girl!! Everyone told us that it wouldn't make a difference and that you couldn't select the sex of your baby yet here we are! A family of boys with a history of boys with the first girl on the way in 2 generations!! So excited :)

Followed this book exactly and I'm thrilled to announce I'm finally getting my baby girl after two boys. Also altered my diet. 2nd half of the book more useful. 💙💙💖

For a boy I tried the methodology of using ovulation kits and I did not get pregnant time and again. I think that I would miss the window. After following the cervical mucus method I not only got pregnant with the second try but it was a boy! I also told my friend who had 2 girls already and it also worked for her. We tried every other day when lots of mucus was present. A lot of the information in this book is available on websites as well.

Not only does this book inform you how to gender sway, it also teaches you how to track ovulation and the history of conception. It’s a fun and educational read even if you don’t want to try gender swaying. I learned more from this book than what I could find on the internet. I bought the book on kindle.

I bought the book in March. Was a good book, easy to read and understand. Me and my husband have three boys and we are going to try for a girl. Just waiting to see how it goes.Update. Am having a Girl! I think this really worked for me. We followed the book all the way. And now we have our first baby girl

First, I’d like to say that I have not attempted to become pregnant yet...so I cannot say if it worked or not. I’ll update once I become pregnant and then again once we find out what the sex is (we have two sons and are trying for a girl with this last baby). My stars are based on the book itself. I felt like the first few chapters were unnecessary, like they were trying hard to make the reader believe in their process (which i already do hence why i purchased the book). Other than that, the rest of the information was great. I feel confident in this journey. My cycle should start tomorrow and I’m excited to begin tracking my CM and BBT daily. If my next three cycle charts appear “average”, we will give our first real try in May. :)

I bought this for a friend w/ 4 boys. I had followed it to a T, and had a girl as targetted, and had a friend who had recommended it to me, and she had a boy as targetted so I absolutely believe- it's all in the timing!

my husband read it. he wanted a baby boy and he got one. I guess the book my have been successful.

This book was an immediate hit with my third graders, especially the boys. They wanted to read it again and again.

it's ok

My son loved it ... I like it too ...It's an extra book in our bookshelf ... Price could be better ... Books are getting expensive ...

I have most of the books that Diane has written about Gilbert. They are the first ones choosen off the shelf for nightly readings. I've made sure my nieces and nephews have this book collection as well. Everyone should enjoy a Gilbert tale from time to time.

My 6 year old is a pretty good reader, but she doesn't have a lot of stamina, so short, interesting chapters are perfect for her. This book has three short and sweet chapters, and the story is cute and funny. I asked my daughrer to read me one chapter, and she didn't want to stop and ended up reading the whole thing. I would compare the reading level to Frog and Toad.

I decided to read this book after I read Stephen Fair. Although The Book of Changes has many good stories, the stories weren't as well written as Stephen Fair. This collection is pretty good though becuase it covers a wide area of subjects, and there is something for everyone. Some stories are better than others as is the case of every short story collection, but the better stories in The Book of Changes are a bit hard to grasp. If you've never read Tim Wynne-Jones before, you should start with The Maestro or Stephen Fair. This short story collection would be more suitable for kids than young adults.

"Promise of Blood is a hugely promising debut. Guns, swords, and magic together? What more could you want? How about tense action, memorable characters, rising stakes, and cool, cool magic? The book was very well written, with tight prose and flowing words. It was quite the fast read.My gripe with it, though, is that the characters lack ... well, character. Everyone is clasping hands and everyone is someone's "old friend", but this common history is never explored. The characters are pulled through the story by the action itself, not their internal motivations or wishes. Also, to me, Tamas was unfortunately quite a boring character, all gruffness and coldness. Taniel, on the other hand, had some depth to him, but it mostly took the form of his sole vice -> the gunpowder addiction.** MINOR SPOILER AHEAD **Just two more things: If the Privileged are so damned powerful, why are they getting killed off like dogs? I know Taniel and his skill are special, but still, it kind of undermines the initial scene where they describe how hard it was to dethrone the king.** SPOILER END **Also, if there are Privileged and Marked and Knacked, why haven't the culture and economy evolved around it, at least a bit? It is basically the 19th century, but there is magic (which I know was the goal, but do I believe there was a way to make the world a bit less vanilla while staying true to the original vision).I feel like my review came off as harsh, but I truly scraped the bottom of the barrel to find these issues. Otherwise, it's a solid book and I look forward to reading more from Brian McClellan, especially if he addresses the things that bothered me a bit!Good luck to the author!

I just got back into reading (been over 10 years since I've read a full novel). Last thing I read was The Hobbit when I was a teenager....lol. But I found myself looking up and realizing I was flying through this book. Didn't remember turning pages, going through chapters. I sometimes have trouble starting books because I have a hard time grasping the world building, introduction of multiple characters, plot, etc. all at once. But I really liked how this book was laid out. There are 3 characters/Points of View the book follows, which is solid, but not too much. It was easily enough to follow and enjoy. Sometimes 20 PoV is too much (like "Game of Thrones" & "The Red Knight"), espeically when people die soon after they're introduced...Things that I couldn't get enough of:-The fighting/magical concepts! So good! Guns, magic, swords and the combination of all. Killer!-Character development! Great job on characters. You'll easily like them. Great supporting characters too.-Drama/Thrills! Always drama when there is betrayal and "end of the world" stuff haha.Things that were "pleasing" to my readings:-Just the right amount of detail. There wasn't ever a lack of detail nor was there ever too much. I can't stand reading a page or two of descriptive details explaining an armored knight's chest piece. I'll get bored and have an ADD attack and start thinking about my weekend plans haha.-Environment. McClellan didn't cover the entire world in 600 pages nor spend chapters describing streets, fields, mountains, etc. He does a good job allowing your mind to naturally fill in the details he doesn't describe.-Little bit of effection/concern between characters. Even the hardest of people show it. Nice to know your favorite characters have a heart.Unique concepts to me that I enjoyed:-WHAT THE PIT!!! haha they use "pit" for curseing. It's different and I like it. Serves it's purpose and makes the book less vulgar. :)-2 maps in the front of book to give better visualization/understanding.-The different types of magic/scorcery.My troubles/dislikes:-I was a bit confused in the beginning/middle about the Church leaders/characters and people they're affiliated with. Probably something I should look back into. This book was great from the beginning to the end! McClellan can write for sure. I'm really looking foward to the other books in the series. More possible character development and more world problems are possible :)

This is an historical fantasy set on an alternate Earth in an equivalent to our late 18th Century. It is a time of enlightenment where learned men do not believe in gods and where they yearn to live in a system that isn’t headed up by a king. This book opens on the night of a coup in which a Field Marshall and his cabal have overthrown the king and killed the sorcerers protecting him.The book has multiple stories going at once – the Field Marshall’s story, his son’s search for a missing sorcerer, an inspector working for the Field Marshall and a laundress whose life was turned upside down by the coup. All are well written and the transitions between one to the other are often at chapter breaks so they’re not as startling as they can sometimes be by unskilled authors. The magic system in the book is tiered with different people having an affinity for different types of magic; there are the Privileged who are essentially traditional sorcerers, the Marked who draw their power from gunpowder and are especially skilled with guiding bullets and then the Knacked who have a single talent that can give them an edge over normal people – like the need not to sleep. The Privileged and the Marked work in opposition to each other which adds to the overall drama in the book. This book is well done and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, the author or the publisher has chosen to use replacement swearing. The characters all use the word ‘Pit’ as an expletive which is fine in and of itself, but they use it over and over every page or so. It became tedious after a while as it was the only expletive used.I give the book 4 stars for the quality of the book itself but I have to take away a star for the over use of that single world. Be more creative with your replacement swearing.3 Stars.
