The subject of robust control began to receive worldwide attention in the late 1970's when it was found that Linear Quadratic Optimal Control (optimal control), state feedback through observers, and other prevailing methods of control system synthesis such as Adaptive Control, lacked any guarantees of stability or performance under uncertainty. Thus, the issue of robustness, prominent in Classical Control, took rebirth in a modern setting. Optimal control was proposed as a first approach to the solution of the robustness problem. This elegant approach, and its offshoots, such as theory, have been intensely developed over the past 12 years or so, and constitutes one of the triumphs of control theory. The theory provides a precise formulation and solution of the problem of synthesizing an output feedback compensator that minimizes the norm of a prescribed system transfer function. Many robust stabilization and performance problems can be cast in this formulation and there now exists effective, and fairly complete theory for control system synthesis subjected to perturbations, in the framework. The theory delivers an "optimal" feedback compensator for the system. Before such a compensator can be eployed in a physical (real-world) system it is natural to test its capabilities with regard to additional design criteria, not covered by the optimality criterion used. In particular the performance of any controller under real parameter uncertainty, as well as mixed parametric-unstructured uncertainty, is an issue which is vital to most control systems. However, optimal theory is incapable of providing a direct and nonconservative answer to this important question. The problem of robustness under parametric uncertainty received a shot in the arm in the form of Kharitonov's Theorem for interval polynomials, which appeared in the mid-1980's in the Western literature. It was originally published in 1978 in a Russian journal. With this surprising theorem the entire field of robust control under real parametric uncertainty came alive and it can be said that Kharitonov's Theorem is the most important occurrence in this area after the development of the Routh-Hurwitz criterion. A significant development following Kharitonov's Theorem was the calculation, in 1985, by Soh, Berger and Dabke of the radius of the stability ball in the space of coefficients of a polynomial. From the mid-1980's rapid and spectacular developments have taken place in this field. As a result we now have a rigorous, coherent, and comprehensive theory to deal directly and effectively with real parameter uncertainty in control systems. This theory nicely complements the optimal theories as well as Classical Control and considerably extends the range of possibilities available to the control specialist. The main accomplishment of this theory is that it allows us to determine if a linear time invariant control system, containing several uncertain real parameters remains stable as the parameters vary over a set. This question can be answered in a precise manner, that is, nonconservatively, when the parameters appear linearly or multilinearly in the characteristic polynomial. In developing the solution to the above problem, several important control system design problems are answered. These are 1) the calculation of the real parametric stability margin, 2) the determination of stability and stability margins under mixed parametric and unstructured (norm-bounded or nonlinear) uncertainty 3) the evaluation of the worst case or robust performance measured in the norm, over a prescribed parametric uncertainty set and 4) the extension of classical design techniques involving Nyquist, Nichols and Bode plots and root-loci to systems containing several uncertain real parameters. These results are made possible because the theory developed provides built-in solutions to several extremal problems. It identifies apriori the critical subset of the uncertain parameter set over which stability or performance will be lost and thereby reduces to a very small set, usually points or lines, the parameters over which robustness must be verified. This built-in optimality of the parametric theory is its main strong point particularly from the point of view of applications. It allows us, for the first time, to devise methods to effectively carry out robust stability and performance analysis of control systems under parametric and mixed uncertainty. To balance this rather strong claim we point out that a significant deficiency of control theory at the present time is the lack of nonconservative synthesis methods to achieve robustness under parameter uncertainty. Nevertheless, even here the sharp analysis results obtained in the parametric framework can be exploited in conjunction with synthesis techniques developed in the framework to develop design techniques to partially cover this drawback. The objective of this book is to describe the parametric theory in a self-contained manner. The book is suitable for use as a graduate textbook and also for self-study. The entire subject matter of the book is developed from the single fundamental fact that the roots of a polynomial depend continuously on its coefficients. This fact is the basis of the Boundary Crossing Theorem developed in Chapter 1 and is repeatedly used throughout the book. Surprisingly enough this simple idea, used systematically is sufficient to derive even the most mathematically sophisticated results. This economy and transparency of concepts is another strength of the parametric theory. It makes the results accessible and appealing to a wide audience and allows for a unified and systematic development of the subject. The contents of the book can therefore be covered in one semester despite the size of the book. In accordance with our focus we do not develop any results in theory although some results from theory are used in the chapter on synthesis. In Chapter 0, which serves as an extension of this preface, we rapidly overview some basic aspects of control systems, uncertainty models and robustness issues. We also give a brief historical sketch of Control Theory, and then describe the contents of the rest of the chapters in some detail. The theory developed in the book is presented in mathematical language. The results described in these theorems and lemmas however are completely oriented towards control systems applications and in fact lead to effective algorithms and graphical displays for design and analysis. We have throughout included examples to illustrate the theory and indeed the reader who wants to avoid reading the proofs can understand the significance and utility of the results by reading through the examples. A MATLAB based software package, the Robust Parametric Control ToolBox, has been developed by the authors in collaboration with Samir Ahmad, our graduate student. It implements most of the theory presented in the book. In fact, all the examples and figures in this book have been generated by this ToolBox. We gratefully acknowledge Samir's dedication and help in the preparation of the numerical examples given in the book. A demonstration diskette illustrating this package is included with this book. I wasn't familiar with Lisa Wingate's books before I read "Before We Were Yours" but I'll be looking for others now that I've read it. I was drawn fully into the story, set in both the 1930s and present day. It follows the story of the Foss children in the '30s and Avery Stafford in present day, and brings to light a horrifying and shameful real-life scandal.From the '30s to 1950, a woman named Georgia Tann, who ran the (Memphis) Tennessee Children's Home Society, stole poor children from their families and newborn babies from single mothers and sold them to celebrities, politicians and others who could afford them. It was all done under the guise of helping orphaned and abandoned children find good homes, but it was actually human trafficking.Avery Stafford finds a puzzling photograph that leads her into an ever more confusing story of secrets and lies inside her upright, respected family. Along the way, she starts to question the man her family has picked for her to marry and her expected role within the family. What follows is a heartwarming story of love, betrayal, memories and staying true to your heart. In addition to the well developed characters and background love story, I liked the realistic view into the 1930s.I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about a dark time in our history, when being poor was enough to have a family ripped apart forever.

The Tennessee Children's Home run by Georgia Tann did exist for decades. The stories of children whisked away from poor parents, as they walked to school, were born in hospitals, played on their front porches, is a sad tale of the subterfuge used by this woman who made millions on "adoption fees". In many cases, the children were adopted by wealthy parents, satisfied by their obtaining the child they had so wanted. But, there were others, who disappeared forever, were abused in the children's home, while waiting for a home, or more likely, waiting to go back home to their birth families. Few adoptive parents knew about these terrible conditions, nor did the state, nor the birth families, who were left wondering what happened to their children.This novel takes the facts and the recounted stories of the children who later were able to locate family members, when the documents were unsealed in 1995 (the home was closed in 1950). Lisa Wingate weaves a plausible story of a group of siblings caught up in this scheme. It is heart breaking to ponder, but presents a real situation that occurred in our country. Read this, along with "The Orphan Train", to get a sense of how fortunate you may be.

This was one of the hardest books I have ever read. The subject matter is disturbing and unforgettable. It is especially compelling because it is based on something that really happened. That being said, it was well-written and very hard to put down. I appreciated the uplifting ending as it somewhat mollifies the agony of the subject matter.

This is the first book I've ever read by Lisa Wingate, but having read it I will search through her other titles. It was an excellent book! The subject matter was hard, and sad at times, as I knew it would be before starting. I could not put it down because I had to find out how the story ended. It was a glorious book, I'm happy that I read it!

This is a REAL story. It is poignant, sad, unbelievable and a must read to learn about how families were destroyed and children were mistreated in orphanages prior to 1950. The way children were stolen and placed in homes under cruel caretakers is chilling. Children were stolen, warehoused in homes until they could be adopted into "high class" families. The family story centered in Lisa Wingate's book describes five children and their parents who live on a river houseboat on inlet to Mississippi River. They are close to lowest of socio-economic status possible. But,they dearly care for one another, especially the children and their mother. At term with pregnancy for twins when the midwife is unable to deliver the mother, the midwife insists the father take her to a hospital. They are told the twins do not survive, but the mother does. When the mother and father return to their houseboat the other five children have been stolen by the authorities. How the children survive their existence under the ugly supervisor, Miss Tann, their separate adoptions and how they manage to regain contact with each other is an unbelievable story. Andy was not stopped until 1950.

And if a father joined the Shakers with his children, as James Chapman did in 1814 in upstate New York, his estranged wife had neither parental rights nor legal recourse. In his smoothly narrative and revealing debut, Woo objectively deciphers this segregated society that, despite its stance in the Chapman case, believed in gender equality and was led by its own "Mother Lucy." Eunice Chapman successfully took her case against the Shakers and her husband to the New York legislature, where she obtained a divorce and regained legal custody of her three children, forcibly taking them back in 1818. Indeed, this uppity woman's five-year struggle to gain custody of her children at any cost is most deservedly the stuff of an HBO miniseries. When Eunice's abusive, alcoholic husband, James Chapman, decided to clean up his life by joining a reclusive religious group called the Shakers, they asked that he face up to his marital and paternal responsibilities. His membership rested upon convincing Eunice to join him. She declined. So he sold all his worldly possessions, left Eunice with little but the clothes on her back, and abducted their three children to live with him inside the Shaker compound. While the U.S. was engaged in the War of 1812, Eunice launched a personal war on both governmental and religious authority. Alas much of the empathy we might feel for this dirt-poor mother and her quest gets lost amidst Woo's ponderous, thesis-like approach. --Donna Chavez

Of how many impeccably researched histories can it be said, "I couldn't put it down!" Illyon Woo has meticulously pieced together mostly original sources into a book that has the sweep and pace of great drama. She does not invent, but has sources for details right down to the weather and the condition of roads. (I know this because I read both her Sources and Acknowlegdments sections, so curious was I about her methods and so reluctant was I to let go of this book!) As for the story told, it is an extraordinary commentary on the roles and rights of women, the struggle of a new nation to create and then bend and amend its laws, the power of marketing (yes, even in the early 19th century), and the peculiar nature of Shaker culture. Woo says in her Epilogue that the sui generis nature of Eunice Chapman's story has made it a footnote to legal history. But Woo rescues the footnote, showing how both the Shakers and Eunice's struggle against them were peculiarly American, and can tell us much about how we - American women and men of all religious stripes - live today. And why. Whatever Woo writes next, I'm there.

I am a history junkie. I especially enjoy works that give a rich, full flavor of a time as well as presenting different views of the same event. This book delivers nicely on both counts, relating the atmosphere in New York State and the country in the early 1800's, especially in regards to religion, the condition of women, and women's rights. The centerpiece is one womans battle to regain her children, who had been spirited away by her husband. At a time when a woman had little recourse against those that harmed or mistreated her, Eunice Chapmans battle was an amazing one. What could have been a small family drama escalated into a war that caught up politicians, lawyers, the Shaker religion and such luminaries as Martin Van Buren and Thomas Jefferson.All that aside, the author makes the book highly accessible to the reader, writing in an engaging style that makes this a page-turning historical mystery. It is just plain great storytelling!

I would recommend this to people who like reading historical books. In thisday and age - we tend to forget how things were "in the day" - I am a child ofthe 1950's and can remember how scandalous divorce and pregnancy out ofwedlock were - not that long ago! I feel that our female population doesn't reallyunderstand the progress that has been made in our rights. In this day and ageit is a given that the mother will get custody of children...this wasn't always thecase.... I really enjoyed the book - hope others will also.

Ilyon Woo tells the story of Eunice Chapman, who fought to regain custody of her children and some control of her own fate, when her husband joined the Shakers in the early 1800s in New York state.Woo presents her detailed research into the Shaker communities and the life of the Chapman family in a readable, riveting story. Her prose is always grounded in fact and the footnotes are available for checking her sources.Woo was able to present both sides of the conflict evenly and fairly. She set the whole situation into the cultural context of the day with clarity and insight into the biases and advances of the Shakers and the complex personalities of the main characters. She doesn't whitewash anything, but tries to tell as complete a story as the evidence will support.The book is also full of interesting details about the Shaker's theology and way of life, beyond the plain facts that they lived simply in sex-segregated communities.

"The Great Divorce" is an interesting book that lifts what might otherwise be (as the author acknowledges) a footnote in history to a fully told tale. The story of the miserable marriage of Eunice and James Chapman and of her fight to reclaim her children when her husband joins a Shaker community is thoroughly researched. Through this family, Woo examines early 19th century divorce and custody laws and also gives a full and sympathetic picture of the orderly Shaker communities that were roiled by the fierce battle for custody of the three young Chapman children. The story has a contemporary feel, as it was all too easy then, as now, to incite public antipathy, even mob action, against a little understood and sometimes unpopular religion. Another contemporary aspect is also evident: what to do when one parent joins a religious sect and takes the children with him or her?Woo set out to make this tale, whose bizarre turns titillated newspaper readers in the second decade of the 19th century, one that would appeal to a general audience, as well as an academic one. In this, she is less successful. Sometimes she conjures up the thoughts that Eunice Chapman might have been thinking, given her circumstances, although Eunice is such an odd (and often unappealing) individual that these passages seem contrived. No more successful are Woo's attempts to present Eunice as a kind of early feminist, although the issues this determined and single-minded woman raised certainly shone a (brief) light on the status of women in this period.Read "The Great Divorce" for the entertaining historical footnote that it is. Opens a window on early 19th century life in America. Unlike similar works that strive to be scholarly and pretentious, this is a good old fashioned story that happens to be true.

In a remarkable first book, Gloria Norris gives us a memoir of a terribly dysfunctional childhood that is equal parts terrifying, tender, funny, sad and uplifting.Memoirs of difficult childhoods aren't new, but Ms. Norris brings a freshness to the genre with the intelligence of her writing, and with her huge sense of empathy. Even the monsters, the lost and the destructive characters in this book have human sides, and that sense of humanity lifts this far beyond the "I was a victim" re-telling of early life scars. Like Ms. Norris, at times we feel kindly to the monsters of her past, and see that they too are victims of their own upbringings and history.The book is also brought to life by the sense of humor found in the the midst of the dark tale. What could have been dour is enlivened by the playfulness of both the characters, and Ms. Norris's writing. Watch the way she subtly and oh-so-slowly changes the vocabulary and voice of her narrator, as if she was growing up all over again as she re-tells her story, taking on some of the voice of her both hated and loved father.There's also a sort of murder mystery in the book, revolving around Ms. Norris's childhood crush on an older neighborhood girl who seemed to have everything young Gloria wanted; brains, courage, beauty, a free-sprit. That haunting obsession becomes a running theme through the story as that perfect girl's father is murdered and no one will listen to the daughters insistence that the case is more complex than everyone assumes.I raced through the book in under 48 hours. It's compelling, fun to read, and has some of the page-turner quality of a thriller, while it's deeper themes of loss, re-birth and possibilities in the dark echo long after one is finished.I look forward to reading it again.

This book begins as a memoir of a 9 year old girl living in the projects of Manchester, NH. This is the story of love, hate, verbal abuse, drug abuse, alcoholism, murder and mental illness. Despite all the dysfunction, or perhaps because of it, it is a story of survival and success for the author. I found this especially interesting as I grew up during the same time frame in Manchester and had heard some of the stories told in this book.

Truthfully, I was a bit hesitant about opening this book, based on one of the promos. I'm so glad I did, and I think you'll be rewarded tenfold if you do as well. For two reasons. First, the story is gripping. Once I started the book, I could barely stop to eat. It's gritty, often tragic, but ultimately triumphant! It's told with humour, insight and compassion. The main characters are among the most vividly portrayed people I've read in years. You're transported into their world, and you feel like you are standing right next to them, as each decides how to play the cards they've been dealt. There are villians, but outnumbered by flawed, very human, real life heroes.Secondly, the writing is wonderful! It's spare, evocative, beautifully crafted, powerful. I'm self-protectvive about what I read, and I avoid graphic, gratuitous violence. Remarkably, though the story is about violence, the author hasn't succumbed to that temptation, or any other emotional shortcuts. Instead you're moved by the sheer power of her observations, and insights, and the vivid portraits she paints. You can't help but grieve and cheer for the people in KooKooLand.

FANTASTIC read, really a great achievement. There are several things going on here: 1) Gloria covers perhaps the most bizarre crime story in NH history, from the perspective of a family friend of the principals; 2) Life growing up with a complicated low level criminal (her father) who hunts his own food, reads Vonnegut and watches art films while drinking, stealing and threatening violence on his family, and 3) It’s a coming of age piece with many surprising turns. Written in the wise-cracking voice of the 9 year old heroine it took us no time to fall in love with, the book in turns gives the reader belly laughs, worry about the state of civilization, and absolute wonder that, yes, all this actually DID happen. Highly recommended.

Hidden in plain sight in America this mirrors many people's reality. Not all of the homes ruled by an angry father were as poor as this one but many of us are familiar with the raging bull that rules the roost because of a man's sense of inferiority. Cowering women who stay silent and.terrified children who fight their way to freedom as adults, is sadly more common than is comfortable. The quick smacks across the face that render bloody noses until they realize the power of simple resistance such as screaming near an open window so the neighbors will hear. So glad that this family was saved from the violence of an inadequate male in the end.

Extraordinary in every respect. The writing is superb, venturing as easily into the slang of the time (mostly the 60's) to the sublime and poetic. There is much humor in darkness, as there is in life. And this is the author's exquisite retelling of her hyper natural growing up. The story is riveting, as is the author's humor, heart and insight. Highly recommend. One of those books that is so good, you do not want it to end!!!

A very foul mouthed bullying father, a doormat mother and siblings are portrayed perfectly by the author who even manages to interject humor in her story. She is subjected to contains racial slurs, abuse, crime and derogatory name calling by her Greek father who is oblivious to his awful behavior "because he is Greek and boss of the house". There were times when I would have tossed the book across the room in anger had I not been reading it on my Kindle. Knowing this was an autobiography kept me reading knowing the author had succeeded in life against all odds ... or this book would not have been written.
