The Eyewitness Guide to Washington, DC starts off with a brief introductory section that includes a history of the city, general information, as well as a summary of the major galleries, museums, and memorials. This section is almost reminiscent of a Frommer's guide as it includes a best of list and a sample itinerary, which are both staples of that guidebook franchise.Next, the book moves on to a section-by-section examination of the city. There are five geographical areas within the city as well as two more beyond that are broken down here. Each section offers a reasonable amount of information on major attractions. With the maps, photos, and 3-D style cutaway representations of some of the major buildings the Eyewitness Guide is far superior to others when it comes to giving you a sense of the physical reality of Washington. No amount of words can communicate as thoroughly what a place is like compared to these pictures. I found this invaluable in helping me decide which attractions were most important for me to visit in my limited time in the city.The book also contains a list of hotels and restaurants but this is the weakest part of the guide. There are only the most basic descriptions and information and no ratings are offered at all. Another guide such as Frommer's Washington, D.C. 2007 (Frommer's Complete) or the The Unofficial Guide to Washington, D.C. (Unofficial Guides) will be far more helpful for this aspect of planning your trip.Overall, I found this guide very useful for deciding what to do while visiting Washington, DC. It is nowhere near as helpful for choosing restaurants and hotels and I recommend buying a second guide to get more information of that kind. No one guide will have everything you need but this one will be a great start.

In planning for a trip to D.C. I purchased the most recent fodors gold travel guide. It was nice and got me headed in the right direction, but did offered little help after the air and hotel reservations were made and I had planned a day to day itinerary. I wanted more information...and more photos of the places I was going to be visiting and the overall history behind it all. The DK eyewitness guide did not disappoint me. If you have ever seen a DK book you have an idea of what to expect, lots of valuable and interesting information along with great photos and brilliant 3-D cutaway drawings of the major buildings of Washington. This book is slightly geared towards visitors from outside the US (it describes our currency, our government, our electric plugs, how to drive here, etc.) but is still invaluable for anyone who wants good information on D.C. The guide is small enough and could be carried around easily, and it even has a large metro rail map in the back cover. I look forward to using the DK eyewitness guide in D.C.

For the first time visitor to Washington, D.C., this book is invaluable. With it's excellent descriptions and insights, grasping a sense of the city's many offerings is easy and fun. But what truly sets this book apart from other travel guides, are the unique and informative full color layouts of the city streets, complete with 2-D images of the buildings for reference. It's nearly impossible to 'get lost' with this guide in your hands!

I used this guide for a one day trip to D.C. I especially liked how it laid out all of the floorplans and highlights of the Smithsonians, and I appreciated the Metro layout. For D.C., I might recommend this as the primary guide, and not recommend getting both a Frommers type and one of these, which I do for larger cities.

When I am traveling somewhere that I've never visited, I always buy the Eyewitness Travel Guide for the city or area where I'm visiting. These guides are very comprehensive and include anything you could possibly need to maximize your visit, including where to stay, where to eat, location of sights you'll want to see and the hours the sights are open, as well as specialties of the area. I wouldn't travel without these.

I got this along with the Streetwise DC Metro Map. Both were easy to toss in my purse & pull out as I needed it to know where we were headed & what we'd be seeing section by section. Great price; great delivery.

.I loved Once We Were Brothers and did not think the author could top his first novel but he has with Saving Sophie. This is a fast paced book that has you jumping from Chicago to Hawaii and spending most of the novel in the middle east. The first book centered on good versus evil and this one takes evil a big step forward. I have a question? Why are there only 8 reviews prior to mine when the internet is filled with them?As you know Sophie is six year old child who loses her mother to an insidious disease that kills her quickly. Her father is grief stricken and Sophie and he are bonded by their love. The grandparents who live in Hebron which is a hotbed for terrorists kidnap the child and try and brain wash her into believing her parents did not love her. Jack, the tormented dad steals millions of dollars in his effort to pay off the evil grandfather and get his child back. You think Nazis are evil? You have not met the grandfather and his cronies. They take it even farther if possible. This book is less sentimental than the debut novel and keeps you riveted to the novel. Being a cynical New Yorker I thought nothing could shock me but the ending of this book blew my socks off! their are Russian baddies, American bad guys, and the worst-the mad tyrannical doctor who has hatched a plot to rid the Arab world of Jews with germ warfare but he takes it a step further than you thought possible. Liam and Catharine are back from the first book but you don't see too much of Catharine in this novel. There is a fast talking too brave for her own good spy who has her own agenda. NO spoilers. She spends a good part of the book with the Liam in the middle east to try and foil a plot to kill off thousands of Israelis but also to supposedly save Sophie. She is a loving little girl who adored her parents and is clinging to the hope that her daddy will come and get her while the psychotic terrorist grandfather keeps drumming into her mind that her father does not want her anymore. there was one bugaboo and that was all the history the author wrote into the book. As a Jew I was glad I now have a better knowledge of the birth of Israel and all that has happened since WWI-but-I think he could have cut the lesson short a tad. Once I made it through the novel took off like a rocket with more twists and turns than a roller coaster. their are evil Russians and Americans. Saving Sophie had me riveted right to the shocker of an ending. I love this author and was relieved he will have a third book coming out next year. I have to give Saving Sophie two big thumbs up. Warning: there is more violence here than in his previous tome. This is not for the faint hearted. Sit back....make some popcorn....and enjoy.

As Jack Sommers copes with the loss of his wife, he struggles to retake his daughter from kidnappers, his own in-laws, and becomes involved in an embezzlement scheme. Kayla Cummings, a spy operative intent on catching a particularly evil and determined group of men, works together with Taggart and Sommers to foil the terror plot and snatch the perpetrators.The novel advances quickly with relatively short chapters narrated by the different characters and moves from Chicago, to Hawaii, Israel and Hebron. The novel, infused with history of Israel, beginning with Abraham, and the history of the Israeli-Arab conflict, succeeds to avoid typical character stereotypes. However, both romantic relationships in the novel become somewhat melodramatic.

Loved Saving Sophie! Another great adventure for Liam Taggart & Catherine Lockhart. This book focused more on Private Eye Liam Taggart and was an exceptional read. I learned a lot about the history of Israel and the Middle East in this race to free Sophie and stop a full on terrorist attack. Very exciting, I loved the characters in this book including Jack Sommers, Marcy and Kayla. Favorite line: Racism will never win out. It's flawed in every sense because love is much stronger than hate. My new favorite Author tells a great tale. Looking forward to reading more of his work.I give Saving Sophie 5 stars for its great story.I would recommend this book to legal thriller fans. An

Mr. Kelsey is to receive 96 million dollars the next day after the disbursement!If that doesn’t peak your interest I’ll be surprised! I’ll add another location to really make you wonder...... Israel! Enjoy!

Ronald Balson teaches much historical background in Saving Sofie, but those parts of the book become tedious. Much as I appreciated the significance, it had little bearing as the story unfolds. Regardless of the understanding of the Jewish - Israeli - Palestinian conflict, the characters continue to pursue their goals: saving Sofie and stopping a terrorist plot. There is a strong sense throughout the book that it will be a fairytale ending, yet I was compelled to read on and quite enjoyed the book. Characters are developed enough for the reader to care, and I am enough of a romantic to have been satisfied. Well done. I would definitely recommend albeit the long historical passages.

Wow, this book has great pictures and descriptions.I'd started about 6 weeks ago with The Complete Idiot's Guide to Yoga Illustrated, 4th Edition and I do recommend that book to beginners like myself, especially if going to class at first is not practical (which it isn't for me).But after working with the "idiots" guide, I wanted something with more advanced positions and real pictures, instead of the drawn artwork in the guide book (which isn't bad, but it lacks what an actual photo can show).Anyway, I haven't read all the extra stuff in this book, I'm sure it's good, but I wanted to write a review based upon the reasons I bought the book, the excellent pictures and the well written descriptions of how to achieve, safely, the position pictured.In that sense, a beginner could start with this book as well, or in conjunction with one more styled to a newbie, but in any case, if you're interested in yoga and want a good book for descriptions and pictures of a variety of poses, this is a great book, I'm sure I'll be going back to it for directions over and over again.

I have been studying Iyengar yoga for some time, but never really paid attention to the names of the poses. Now I am studying with instructors who use the Sanskrit names for the asanas. I had to do something; boy, am I fortunate this book was available. I have it right by my yoga mat at home. It beats the heck out of stick figures, and it's well-written and very easy to understand. Best of all, the photographs are of real people, not skinny Yoga Magazine cover models. It's real, it's explanatory, and it's the only book you really need your first few years as an Iyengar (or any other yoga) student. I also bought "Light on Yoga" to round out my understanding of Iyengar himself and his philosophy and methods. Those two books gave me the tools I needed to improve and understand my yoga practice better. Beyond these two books, a trip to India is the only other thing you'll need!

There is a wealth of information in this book. It's an old book, but certainly more than helpful and relevant to any Iyengar yoga student. There are courses for a home practice included which are great. Anyone getting into Iyengar yoga would benefit from this book. Coupled with a strong live, classroom teacher, the two can work hand-in-hand to develop a strong Iyengar yoga practice.

Great for a step-by-step guide to mastering the poses and the routines in the back are helpful, especially for beginners.

Great compliment to Iyengar’s own book, “Yoga: the Path to Holistic Health.” It is thorough, instructions are written out clearly and the pictures are very helpful.

This is an excellent book for home practice of yoga, provided you have moderate experience through classes and previous home study. The photos and explanations of asanas are very clear, though the practitioner may not possess the same degree of flexibility as the models. The asanas cover a reasonable range of difficulty: there's some challenge, but a diligent student would have hopes of learning all of them. The scattered "reflections" are extremely helpful. The textual explanation of underlying yoga principles, though good, could be expanded somewhat, but one can't expect everything in a book this size.Comparing with Iyengar's "Light on Yoga", the present book is shorter, more user-friendly, has a more modern look, contains fewer asanas, and has less (but more easily readable) discussions of yoga principles. Serious students will likely purchase both in the long run, but the present book is a better first buy.

An excellent book on yoga with comprehensive descriptions and diagrams. I have already recommended it to others.This is not a "sit in your chair" yoga book. Although I don't expect ever to stand on my head or otherwise do extremely difficult poses, the exercises are clearly marked with beginners, intermediate or advanced poses. They are all there for those who will be able to advance. I find the beginning exercises have increased my flexibility. And I am 80 yrs. old. In good condition the price was minimal, much less than the shipping charge.

I opened the box and immediately noticed that this is a -much- smaller book than the Panther edition. The reason? It's about command line Unix, nothing else. This is described as "we've come back to the Unix roots" and that this is consistent with other O'Reilly titles like "Linux in a Nutshell". Perhaps, but titling a book "Tiger in a Nutshell" and discussing only Unix terminal commands is misleading at best, especially since this is a major departure from previous editions.This isn't a bad unix command reference and it is specialized for the BSD Unix of Tiger. Just don't expect it to be more than that.If you're looking for a book that covers Tiger -and- the unix commands in a lot of technical depth, you may want to look at "Mac OS X Tiger Unleashed". That isn't in any sense a nutshell book (it's huge) but it has all the material that this book doesn't.

To be clear, this is a Unix reference. The commands are defined in enough detail to understand and use them easily. It also includes information on command line utilities that are installed with the Xcode Tools. A number of the common UI functions in Tiger have command line equivalents, like Software Update, NetInfo Manager, Grab (screencapture) or Spotlight, so you can create pretty powerful shell scripts. The rest of the information is covered with less detail (i.e. vi, emacs, regular expressions, X11, etc).The chapters on bash, vi and emacs, for example, are ok - but I'm not sure who would use them. If you're coming from a Unix or Linux background, you probably already know this stuff as the info is pretty basic. If you're coming from Windows, I'd recommend other, more detailed, books for learning bash, vi, emacs, etc.I like the detail on the metadata (aka Spotlight) commands. I also found a couple fun commands I hadn't used before, for example "say". Now you can have your shell script announce "Dude, I'm done!" on completion. I will be using this book for the Unix command reference and probably not much else, so it works for me.

Before you go buying this book expecting it to be about Mac OS X with lots of pictures and descriptions about iTunes and the like, if that's what you are looking for this book is NOT for you. If you are looking for a reference on UNIX commands and how to use the Terminal mode on the Mac with OS X 10.4 then you are in the right place. Chock full of more than 500 pages, I really like the way that this book is laid out. Not too long, not too short, this reference lays out all the relevant UNIX commands that you would find useful on the Mac and provides short descriptions of how each command should be used.There is some discussion on the xWindows system and Network Services, but this is mainly a reference on UNIX commands and all the keyboard shortcuts available in emacs.A very nice reference for Max OS X users who use the Terminal on a daily basis. If you are a UNIX expert you probably won't get a lot out of this book, but if you do use the UNIX side of things on the Mac it's probably worth the purchase to add to your library.***** RECOMMENDED

This just came in the mail today. The latest edition of JL Pete Morgan's "US Military Patch Guide".I'm not impressed. The organizational thought that went into this book is woefully lacking. Brigades, regiments and battalion patches all mixed together. Show all the Brigades in order, Do the regiments & battalions the same way. Command (Alpha) units are all over the book. Put them all together for ease of searching. There are no USAF patches at all. CAP insignia are thrown right in the middle of the book next to the Engineer patches. I even talked to the author once and made these suggestions and he seemed to be offended. I should just make my own patch book. Frustrating to say the least.

The part related to US Army is very first class, very good the area for the USMC, while the two sections related to Army Air Force and US Navy are lesser good. Anyway, since I was looking for info on the patches of the US Army, I’m pretty much happy and satisfied.Overall it’s a purchase that I would like to recommend, fair price for a book that showcase almost every (if not every) patch of the US Army, plus very good info on USMC and good info on Army Air Force and USN.One small suggestion to the great author of the book: next revision - please - on each and every category of the patches (infantry, cavalry, artillery, sustainment etc.) create a subdivision for same level of patches (brigades, regiments, battalions), this because several times the patches of different levels are mixed together, and this is not a smart and useful solution. Thanks.

Fabulous! We will miss the Fawn Brook but were luck enough to have 16 years of amazing meals! This book will never replace Herman and Miekes' wonderful creations but we will do our best to emulate.

THe Fawn Brook Inn was a wonderful special occasion restaurant. We will sorely miss it, but will enjoy the cookbook as a fond memory

We have eaten at the Fawn Brook many times. It is one of the great restaurants and their cookbook presents many great recipes. Their escargot is the best I ever ate!

It is a great recipe book, wish I could cook like this all of the time but there is not enough time in a day. The love of cooking shows through in their recipes and they are great.

Great cookbook with enjoyable stores about Herman and the family growing up at the restaurant.

Well...I haven't looked at the cook book yet but I've dined at this beautiful restaurant several times in the past. And without a doubt the food is wonderful. The atmosphere is beautifully intimate and friendly. Nestled in a groove of aspen trees with mountain wild flowers sprinkled along the path to the entry, the dining room is an authentic, rustic, mountain log cabin with large windows peering onto the surrounding mountain gardens. Make sure you have reservations as the Fawn Brook Inn has a great reputation.That said, the cookbook can't be bad. I'll review later when I've tried some of the recipes.
