I read this book after reading Next: Pastoral Succession That Works and seeing how often it's cited. This book is the theory behind the stories in "Next," but this book is more geared towards smaller churches (< 1,000), while "Next" focused on more glamorous ministries.If you need info for pastoral transition, do not complete your course of study without going through this. It has info that other books don't.Some other reviewers have said that the four church cultures the authors describe aren't perfect boxes, and I agree. At first blush, they seemed to me to be man-made constructions, somewhat arbitrary. They might be; but most of us can envision one or more churches in each category, thus making them useful to spur up thought on how idiosyncrasies of church cultures can severely impact the transition strategy.Also, it's obvious from the title that this book tacitly assumes the most common form of church government: Professional clergy with a lay "board." I'd like to see more attention given to a structure made up of multiple elders of equal authority, paid or not; but you have to seek out resources like Biblical Eldership: An Urgent Call to Restore Biblical Church Leadership to get that info.

This is probably the most insightful book I've ever read. The church I attend is studing this vary issue. The Elephant in the Boardroom may be the issue nobody wants to talk about, but the book could not have been called the Zebra in the Boardroom because Pastoral changes in a church is anything but black & white. Because the issues are so numberous, complex, and sesitive the authors have organized and labeled the issues. A church going through transition identifies with one of four culture types, and one of four Pastor categories. In realiy, I think these labels can bleed into each other, but making these identies, can simplify creating a strategy far ahead of an unexpected change or a much needed change. Pastor may not be the only label. Clergy by other names in various churches may spearhead the strategies outlined by "The Elephant in the Boardroom". Bravo!

The first part of the book sets an example of Christ's way of handling transition. It then gives various circumstances in which transition happens and how various role players ought to handle them. Part two is in my view the heart of the book. It posits a theory of four church cultures: the family, the icon, the archival and the replication culture. Each culture must have a different transition approach and failure to adhere to it will result in a failed transition or one that does not favour the health and of the congregation. Part three gives strategic ways of planning for a transition for churches at various capacity levels and using different transitional schemes. The appendix provides tools in a form of a questionnaire, testing the health levels of a congregation and their rediness for a pastoral transition. Overall, the book is a practical guide for those who need a step by step outline in pastoral transition.

I think the authors do a very good job of making a difficult to talk about topic easier. Through the creation of categories of church culture and pastoral leadership styles they give a gift to those tasked with considering the area of pastoral transition.The only weakness or area that isn’t considered is that of how cultural perspective impacts church leadership decisions. How leadership functions in a more homogenous white/black church is of significant importance. Likewise how a multi-ethnic church deals with this topic is filled with different land mines.

Changes in pastoral leadership are inevitable in any church, and often those pastoral changes come suddenly. What would your church do if your pastor suddenly died, became disabled, recieved a "call" to move to another church or was reappointed by the district bishop? Churches are usually unprepared for these moments. Why do churches pretend this "elephant in the boardroom" does not exist? Why do churches not speak openly and plan appropriately for these transitions that everyone knows will one day come (even if they be many years off?) Does your church have a plan in place to make that transition as smooth as possible when it happens? What strategies for transition will work best for your congregation? What strategic options do churches have? This book has chapters specifically related to churches with differing styles of church culture and government. It was higly recommended to me by both an Episcoplian priest and a Presbyterian pastor, and this Baptist Preacher found it most helpful! If you are the brand new pastor coming on the field, or the pastor considering a move from a church to another, or a long-term pastor who wishes to mentor a successor, or even a pastor who has no thought of moving from your present position, you need to read this book. It is good stuff!

I found the book overly complicated by the use of the four different models, the identification of which did not come easily for my church. I was hoping for a more straightforward and linear description of the best practices for transitioning to a new pastor. It would have been helpful to provide a matrix illustration of what the key ingredients of how each of the four models differed from each other.

I am on the leadership team for our church and we are preparing a succession plan for Sr Pastor and others. We found this book very informative and helpful. It provides a very detailed and thoughtful insight into Church staff, specifically Pastors. It helps organizations better understand the challenges, therefore avoiding the pitfalls when replacing pastors and others.

The horror of the scenario themselves is somewhat diminished when you have a table of actual psycopaths. I kind of felt bad for the eldritch abominations.

This is the book that really got me into running Call of Cthulhu. This book has six adventures, all of which I found very easy to read and understand. I found the adventures very easy to run,even for a first-time like me. Each of them had enough information for me to handle all the little 'deviations' my players came up with, and the plothooks were good enough to lure my players in. All the stats for characters and monsters were clean and easily presented. Although I primarily used them for oneshots, it seemed like it would be easy enough to incorporate the stories into a campaign, or even start one. Although the book is intended for 6th edition (I think) I found the adventures easy enough to adjust for the 7th edition.

This is a nice collection of themed CoC adventures. A santitorium is a classic location, and the inbred family also fits in perferctly. For the cost, you shouldn't have an issue finding something that you can use here.

Great scenarios. I have run these with mixed ages and we all have a good time.

It's a classic and a great introduction for anyone just starting in CoC.

Women strengths in golf are different from men. That's why I was looking for a golf book just for women. I was so happy when I found this book. This is a good book for women learning to play golf or if you want more information about clubs or certain shots, like chipping. This book covers what clubs/irons do and the yardage you can get from each one. It also covers shots from the tee to putting. It even goes over reading the green. I enjoyed the book. After telling my husband the book said that some women find the 7 club easier to hit then the 3 iron and it will give you the same distance he brought me one. I'll be trying it out this weekend. Having been a fantasy lover since my teens, I was not bothered by her eclectic writing style, crazy angles and multiple characters. I loved the interesting and varied elements. I fell in love with the incubus, wondered about who the baddies were, and generally thought it was a fun romp.What I did not like were the constant inconsistencies: Imagine a professor being stupid enough to allow a undergraduate to catalog erotica in their house - and the dean of the college agreeing to it! Callie's immature ability to set boundaries and limits, and the obvious conclusions of the various dramas swirling through it are tiring, although not a deal breaker. The fact that Dark basically eliminates Callie's familiar for one third of the book is bizarre, though. The rule of the smoking gun is a hard limit for me. Use it or cut it. I disliked that she introduced a completely new character to do the dirty work - unconnected to anything else in the story. Reintroducing the three women and appearance of the manacles for immediate use without much explanation or context was jarring. Given her undeveloped connections to them, and the mixed evidence presented, I simply don't believe that her even going through the motions of sending her lover to a permanent hell, without more thought, is all that believable.So here I am frustrated and grouchy - kind of like after being with a date who leads you on all night and then says he suddenly has to go home without even kissing you goodnight. If this book were a man he would have a lot of 'splainin' to do, as Ricky Ricardo would say. At the end, Callie falls completely out of character. Dark already firmly established that she would be neither mature nor heartless enough to endure knowing he is in terrible pain, possibly for eternity, especially if it could be due to her own actions. It is clear by the final scene she is in love with this creature and knows he has a true heart, as she stands by the door with the key to release him hanging from her neck. There is less than nothing to support the idea that she would walk calmly back toward the house.Honestly, it feels like her editors decided the book was too long and told her to make it into two or three - but she didn't have the skill and they didn't have the back bone to help her rework the story line to accommodate it. The book is terribly marred by this. Yes, I will read the sequel if I notice when it comes out. For all its flaws I did think it was worth reading.In the meantime, I say: Get on it, Dark, and don't disappoint me again.

Wonderful finish to the trilogy

I had high expectations for The Demon Lover. Juliet Dark is a pseudonym for an author I really enjoy: Carol Goodman. It might have been my high expectation that made this book fall flat. The overall plot is intriguing enough, but it gets lost somewhere in the details.The Demon Lover is about Callie, a college professor, who is visited by a "demon lover." It delves into the discovery of the demon lover, the mysterious circumstances at her college in upstate New York, and other magical/mythical themes.I may just be overloaded with the magical settings (think Twilight, Harry Potter, Discovery of Witches, etc.), but this book just didn't seem to grasp my fictional attention like the others did. I like Carol Goodman's brand of literary suspense and I wish this book had kept up with what she does well. Her characters are usually so well-developed, but I found this book had too many to keep up with to really get involved. I don't often struggle to finish a book, but this one was a fight to the finish. It pains me to say so, but I just didn't enjoy this book.

Reading this was like reading a season of Charmed scripts, Harry Potter, and Katherine Woodiwiss novels all rolled into one. It made for a light, quick read that held my interest from start to finish. If you like stories about mystical creatures, a little mystery, and the stream of Gothic bodice rippers this should be right up your alley.

I just re-read the Fairwick trilogy this summer. The story holds up. Carol Goodman has a rare talent for developing a rich setting, deep mythology and beautiful story. You can't go wrong with anything that she has written.

Definitely a good read! keeps you interested and hoping for the storyline to uncover a fairytale ending.In the same lines as the Trilogy of souls, if you're a fan, I advise for it!

(3.5 stars) This is the first book in a series (Fairwick) by author Carol Goodman, under the pseudonym Juliet Dark and it falls into the fantasy romance category, quite different from her other work. Callie is looking at teaching positions, hoping to land something in NYC, where she and her boyfriend, finishing grad school on the west coast, hope to end up. She interviews at a small town school in upstate NY (Fairwick) and is intrigued by the folklore department and by the cottage of one of her favorite authors Dahlia LaMotte which contains a collection of her notes and papers. She takes the position, much to her grandmother's dislike. What Callie finds is that this place is far more magical that she ever could have expected, starting with a visitation from an incubus in Dahlia's cottage which she has impulsively purchased. She finds that many of the faculty and residents have magical abilities or are faerie creatures. Things begin to go wrong when they try to get rid of the incubus, and Callie must confront her own heritage. This was a little uneven, but had an intriguing premise and has some promise going forward, despite some of the unusual bends in the storyline, particularly at the end.

This is like nothing I've ever read before. From page one I was pulled in. I mean, how could I not? A dark and handsome incubus appears by the light of the moon to ravish women and give them mind blowing orgasms! The Demon Lover is so much more than an adult fantasy or romance novel, though.Something very peculiar is going on in Fairwick, NY. Fantastical, often weather related, occurrences besiege the town and campus. Creatures hide in plain sight, some in human form. Someone, or something, is sucking the life force out of students and even faculty. One student is doomed by a decades old curse. Can it be broken?I absolutely adored this novel! I wasn't expecting it to be a series so it came as a bonus to learn that book two, The Water Witch, releases NEXT month. Can't wait!Demon Lover goes on my favorite read's list.

Honestly, this book was a waste of my money. I needed it for a class, but can't say I really learned anything from it. If you need this book for a class either a. just rent it or b. buy the cheapest copy you can find ...or just don't buy it at all!

Don't let the cover fool you, this book is racist! Most African-Americans do not speak Vernacular English, also known as Ebonics. Maybe the few the author has encountered in her life do, but I bet they'd catch all her typos in this literature. Her statement is inaccurate and stereotyped. In case you are confused, there isn't a language line at the hospital for the national language of "African Americans". I couldn't help but notice that her talk on the LGBT community came from a victimized point of view, referring to senior "members" as poor because of job discrimination. But no such mention of that towards the minority "members" who live through discrimination from birth to death, with no choice to accept or deny their "membership" into this group. I also noticed that in educating the reader of typical characteristics of racial groups, there wasn't a section dedicated to the whites that took the land from the American Indians and brought these Ebonic speaking Africans over to the great USA by force and made them slaves. Talk about discrimination! So my multiracial mind has no choice but to think very lowly of this author. I hope she comes to the light and sees the truth behind her own biases. I will be throwing this paper weight in the trash at the end of the semester.

this book is thorough and has a lot of information, but it is truly a slodge to get through. it is somewhat repetitive in parts, but so complete in its coverage of the topic. i can't say it isn't a good book, just that i wish i didn't have to read it.
