Review
Journaling Power is a fascinating book that showcases the wide-ranging positive effects of journaling. Supported with both scientific research and the author's own personal journey, the book details the many ways that journaling can support individual self-development, healing, goal setting, and personal growth. The author describes her personal journey in a way that invites the reader to feel her courage, resiliency, and durability without seeking pity, commiseration, or sadness in return. Hers has not been an easy path, yet that is not the point of the book. Rather, she shares how he has gained strength and sturdiness through journaling and used this technique to overcome what for many would be a debilitating disease. This was a pleasant book to read and leaves this reader with much to reflect upon and ponder. - Nonfiction Authors Association Book Awards ProgramKIRKUS REVIEWIn this debut manual, a writer examines how journaling can create spiritual, emotional, and intellectual awareness and wellness.McCarthy understands the ability to overcome internal struggles through self-reflection exercises. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in adulthood, she was forced to relearn basic activities like walking, cooking, and even holding a pen. Through journaling, she discovered the time and patience she needed to heal, inside and out. Her book targets readers who seek a practice that will help them center their thoughts, emotions, and principles daily. The author weaves in personal stories, specific exercises, and useful tips that spotlight the common effects and benefits of journaling, such as putting the "Inner Critic" onto the page, learning to recognize automatic negative thoughts that are products of habits, and transforming the "should" voice into a potent, meaningful one. She recommends many techniques, such as "Morning Pages" and "Night Notes," that should keep readers tapped into their conscious selves rather than the emotional gusts of the day. McCarthy provides prompts but emphasizes that journaling has few rules. The only ones she suggests: journal by hand and engage in the practice daily. "Putting the pen to paper is a whole body experience," she asserts, explaining in depth how the journaling process creates a more intimate interaction with the page and forces more succinct, purposeful thoughts due to the physical exertion required. While the book mainly concentrates on journaling, the author also covers an array of other important practices, such as mindful eating, breathing exercises, and expressions of gratitude. She even explains how journaling can become intertwined with healthy eating and other activities that can change a reader's life if performed daily. In total, the work succeeds at adding something fresh, precise, and compelling to the genre: a focused manual that serves as a coach but allows for freedom, exploration, and creative interpretation. This powerful guide offers journaling exercises that promote alertness, self-healing, reflection, and appreciation.BLUE INK REVIEWJournaling Power seamlessly blends memoir with journaling strategies, exercises and a discussion of the benefits of journaling, adding elements of scientific research and mini-case studies. Each of the book's ingredients is provided in just the right amount, creating a perfectly-balanced presentation about the power of therapeutic journaling.Mari L. McCarthy may have been the least likely person to come across the benefits of journaling--and, if she had, she likely wouldn't have tried it had it not been for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. McCarthy had been an extremely busy Fortune 1000 consultant, traveling the globe for work and seldom giving her body a rest. Then, she became "floored, quite literally, by an ongoing health crisis" and ultimately turned to journaling. Forced to slow down by health challenges, she was also forced to face negative emotions she'd carried with her since childhood. And, after a year or two of journaling, she found that she no longer needed prescription medicines to manage her previously-disabling multiple sclerosis. Why? Journaling had also allowed her to find a "door into my soul."McCarthy shares relevant memoir information throughout while guiding readers into developing their own unique journaling practices, providing specific exercises for them to try and encouraging them to modify the tasks to suit their own purposes. To tame someone's "Inner Critic," for example, she describes a freewriting journaling exercise to help identify negative self-image messages and transform them into positive ones. Another exercise guides readers through healing negative relationships with food; a third example focuses on gratitude, while another targets spirituality.Journaling Power is sensitively written, exquisitely paced, encouraging, practical and do-able. Anyone with the desire to look more deeply within will find this book a powerful too

Journaling Power is a helpful and insightful self-help book that teaches a variety of journaling methods in order to set goals, reflect, and to grow in your personal life. Through the book McCarthy shows how journal writing leads to self-growth and even shares personal stories on how it helped her to deal with Multiple Sclerosis symptoms and heal from her past. The book is a very easy read and the chapters on the various types of journaling can do are set in clear, concise chapters. Each chapter offers a variety of prompts to help the reader to write their daily reflections and goals. On top of McCarthy’s personal studies, the book also shares numerous scientific medical studies to show how journaling has helped people in a variety of ways. It talks a lot about the importance of self-care and how you need to make time for yourself in order to heal.I used to keep a daily journal a long time ago and reading this book made me want to start journaling once again. I not only found it enjoyable, but it also helped me with my writing skills (since I love to write). I found a lot of useful prompts/tips that I could incorporate into my own journal.
I've been connected with Journaling Power author Mari McCarthy for a number of years and have observed her devotion to the craft of journaling, it has been impressive. Mari certainly has helped so many people improve the quality of their lives by introducing them to the art of journaling, and teaching them in-depth journaling skills. My philosophy on life is if you want to learn something, then learn from one who is deeply devoted to that particular skill, because they practice what they preach and walk the walk, and Mari is that. I am a therapist and have taught journaling; I have taken courses at the Center for Journal Therapy with Kathleen Adams, I believe strongly in the power of journaling. Nevertheless, reading Journaling Power has re-inspired my journaling practice and given me greater faith that journaling can heal some of the health problems I've been dealing with.In Journaling Power, Mari points toward evidence-based research about the efficacy of journaling, including the work of James W. Pennebaker at the University of Texas. The journal practices in Journaling Power are powerful and relevant. Mari uses positive psychology to reframe and help practitioners create a mental shift. These are not fly-by-night gimmicks, but time-tested, evidence-based methods of healing. Mari displays how the journal is a multi-dimensional tool, like a Swiss army knife for the mind and spirit. Doing these practices will help anyone learn to use journaling tools with elegant simplicity. Journaling Power is ultimately a book of holistic healthcare, showing how the power of expression can restore health and wholeness. The beauty of expressive journaling is that it is "DIY" (do it yourself). I am a therapist, so I believe strongly in support and counseling, but sometimes we can (and should) also learn how to rely upon ourselves to deal with problems, and the journal is a great DIY tool to do that.Mari has used her personal journal to heal from a serious illness, multiple sclerosis. Therefore, her life is anecdotal evidence that the process really works. From that process, she was able to completely forego the need of physicians and conventional medical treatment. Mari is careful to explain that journaling has worked well for her though it may not necessarily work the same for everyone; however, her perspective is, why not give it a shot? Mari was able to give up conventional treatments through expressive healing (though she still uses the physician for diagnostics and consulting). Yet even for those who do not want to give up conventional treatments completely, they may be able to do so partially.I love how Mari describes the dialogue she started having with her body, particularly the dialogue with her hip and the lessons she learned by writing it out. She started to realize the deep-seated roots of her emotional challenges, going back to her childhood and the patterns developed because of the way her parents treated her and how these challenges caused her to neglect her own body and her health and contributed to serious illness as an adult. When she started journaling things began to change, writing was like a conduit to a renewed relationship with her body. When it happened, it's as though a whole new world opened up, and miraculously her health began to improve. One of the most important aspects of this journey was learning to manage the inner critic which is where the emotional and psychological benefits of the journal really come into play. The inner critic is the aspect of the personality that judges and condemns oneself, it seems to occur more in people who had critical mentors and leaders when they were growing up and developing. In counseling we refer to these tools as cognitive behavioral skills, a way to again work on yourself, DIY. I believe Journaling Power is a great book with lots of tangible skills, tools, and insights to help anyone improve the quality of their life through the use of their journal and though journaling is ancient, science is only just beginning to verify the real power of the journal for healing and well-being.
In this book the author provides many journaling writing prompts as well as a discussion of the potential health benefits of regular journaling. Some of the potential benefits include: reduced stress and suffering, cultivating a deeper understanding of the self and important life experiences, and assisting with goal setting. She is clear in the book that, of course, journaling will not benefit every person in the same way, but it is interesting to read about her personal experiences and how journaling has assisted her with managing the symptoms of MS. Due to the practical nature of the book, it would be a great resource for those who are interested in writing therapy but aren’t sure where to start. The book also focuses intensely on strategies for dealing with the ‘Inner Critic’, which has relevance beyond journaling. The concept of ‘Night Notes’ is also discussed. I felt that this particular technique may be a very useful tool for readers suffering from insomnia and other sleep related issues. The writing style is warm and very easy to read. The layout is also functional, allowing the reader to skip to sections of most interest when revisiting the book.
Mari McCarthy's journey of self discovery is the only self healing book you will need! Listening to her story invigorates your own desire to learn from your own story. "My Wake-Up Call" chapter was all the motivation I needed to get writing again. The 'Morning Pages' of Julia Cameron had been a daily practice of mine- as proven by the shelves of filled journals for over 10 years. In recent years I reviewed the journals and finally gave myself permission to release them, except for the for true gems that I kept and re-wrote into longer pieces. Thank you Mari for writing this book and for the gift of inspiration to my inner writer to get back on tract. I have lots to tell, as do we all, and I thrilled to be excited about writing once again!
As a professional poet, I know the importance of words, and I know the healing power they can have on people. However, after reading Mari's story, I learned that the healing power of writing is much more profound than even I knew. In this book, Mari lets us in on her own health issues and the failure of modern medicine when it came to helping her with her illness. She then takes the reader on a journey with her. This journey will teach you how to use daily journaling to find better health and wellness. My favorite things about this book are the journaling exercises. These make it easy to use Mari's journaling techniques in your own life.
