Review

"Promise of Blood is a hugely promising debut. Guns, swords, and magic together? What more could you want? How about tense action, memorable characters, rising stakes, and cool, cool magic? Not only the finest flintlock fantasy I've read, but also the most fun. Brian McClellan is the real thing."―New York Times bestseller Brent Weeks"This book is just plain awesome. I found myself enjoying every moment of it. Innovative magic, quick-paced plot, interesting world. I had a blast."―New York Times bestselling author, Brandon Sanderson"Brian McClellan is an explosive powder keg of imagination with an expertly-plotted fuse. The stories he tells are the stories we'll be reading for years to come."―Sam Sykes on Promise of Blood"The world of the privileged sorcerers and the strange abilities of the powder mages who can manipulate gunpowder are just as well drawn in this captivating universe."―RT Book Reviews (4 1/2 stars)"McClellan's debut packs some serious heat...A thoroughly satisfying yarn that should keep readers waiting impatiently for further installments."―Kirkus (Starred Review)"McClellan's debut is a lot of fun --- a historically influenced fantastical romp filled with machismo, intrigue and magic."―SciFi Now (UK)"McClellan neatly mixes intrigue and action...in a society where new forces like labor unions, gunpowder-armed soldiers, and explosion-causing 'powder mages' clash with traditional magics, more, and beliefs."―Publishers Weekly"Gunpowder and magic. An explosive combination. Promise of Blood is the best debut I've read in ages."―Peter V. Brett"I love the world Brian McClellan builds, Powder Mages with flintlock pistols against white-gloved Privileged for the fate of a nation and more. The book was very well written, with tight prose and flowing words. It was quite the fast read.My gripe with it, though, is that the characters lack ... well, character. Everyone is clasping hands and everyone is someone's "old friend", but this common history is never explored. The characters are pulled through the story by the action itself, not their internal motivations or wishes. Also, to me, Tamas was unfortunately quite a boring character, all gruffness and coldness. Taniel, on the other hand, had some depth to him, but it mostly took the form of his sole vice -> the gunpowder addiction.** MINOR SPOILER AHEAD **Just two more things: If the Privileged are so damned powerful, why are they getting killed off like dogs? I know Taniel and his skill are special, but still, it kind of undermines the initial scene where they describe how hard it was to dethrone the king.** SPOILER END **Also, if there are Privileged and Marked and Knacked, why haven't the culture and economy evolved around it, at least a bit? It is basically the 19th century, but there is magic (which I know was the goal, but do I believe there was a way to make the world a bit less vanilla while staying true to the original vision).I feel like my review came off as harsh, but I truly scraped the bottom of the barrel to find these issues. Otherwise, it's a solid book and I look forward to reading more from Brian McClellan, especially if he addresses the things that bothered me a bit!Good luck to the author!

I just got back into reading (been over 10 years since I've read a full novel). Last thing I read was The Hobbit when I was a teenager....lol. But I found myself looking up and realizing I was flying through this book. Didn't remember turning pages, going through chapters. I sometimes have trouble starting books because I have a hard time grasping the world building, introduction of multiple characters, plot, etc. all at once. But I really liked how this book was laid out. There are 3 characters/Points of View the book follows, which is solid, but not too much. It was easily enough to follow and enjoy. Sometimes 20 PoV is too much (like "Game of Thrones" & "The Red Knight"), espeically when people die soon after they're introduced...Things that I couldn't get enough of:-The fighting/magical concepts! So good! Guns, magic, swords and the combination of all. Killer!-Character development! Great job on characters. You'll easily like them. Great supporting characters too.-Drama/Thrills! Always drama when there is betrayal and "end of the world" stuff haha.Things that were "pleasing" to my readings:-Just the right amount of detail. There wasn't ever a lack of detail nor was there ever too much. I can't stand reading a page or two of descriptive details explaining an armored knight's chest piece. I'll get bored and have an ADD attack and start thinking about my weekend plans haha.-Environment. McClellan didn't cover the entire world in 600 pages nor spend chapters describing streets, fields, mountains, etc. He does a good job allowing your mind to naturally fill in the details he doesn't describe.-Little bit of effection/concern between characters. Even the hardest of people show it. Nice to know your favorite characters have a heart.Unique concepts to me that I enjoyed:-WHAT THE PIT!!! haha they use "pit" for curseing. It's different and I like it. Serves it's purpose and makes the book less vulgar. :)-2 maps in the front of book to give better visualization/understanding.-The different types of magic/scorcery.My troubles/dislikes:-I was a bit confused in the beginning/middle about the Church leaders/characters and people they're affiliated with. Probably something I should look back into. This book was great from the beginning to the end! McClellan can write for sure. I'm really looking foward to the other books in the series. More possible character development and more world problems are possible :)

This is an historical fantasy set on an alternate Earth in an equivalent to our late 18th Century. It is a time of enlightenment where learned men do not believe in gods and where they yearn to live in a system that isn’t headed up by a king. This book opens on the night of a coup in which a Field Marshall and his cabal have overthrown the king and killed the sorcerers protecting him.The book has multiple stories going at once – the Field Marshall’s story, his son’s search for a missing sorcerer, an inspector working for the Field Marshall and a laundress whose life was turned upside down by the coup. All are well written and the transitions between one to the other are often at chapter breaks so they’re not as startling as they can sometimes be by unskilled authors. The magic system in the book is tiered with different people having an affinity for different types of magic; there are the Privileged who are essentially traditional sorcerers, the Marked who draw their power from gunpowder and are especially skilled with guiding bullets and then the Knacked who have a single talent that can give them an edge over normal people – like the need not to sleep. The Privileged and the Marked work in opposition to each other which adds to the overall drama in the book. This book is well done and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, the author or the publisher has chosen to use replacement swearing. The characters all use the word ‘Pit’ as an expletive which is fine in and of itself, but they use it over and over every page or so. It became tedious after a while as it was the only expletive used.I give the book 4 stars for the quality of the book itself but I have to take away a star for the over use of that single world. Be more creative with your replacement swearing.3 Stars.

This past year my company had a meeting on Hawai'i and my wife and I got to spend a little time enjoying the island. However, we did it without a travel guide. I picked up the Lonely Planet travel guide afterward (part of Amazon's Vine program) to see what we'd missed and because I could evaluate how accurate their descriptions were (based on the items we'd seen and done).I'm going to open by saying this is a nice travel guide book. There are color pictures, descriptions of the different things tourist would be interested in, maps, and themed itineraries. The color pictures are nice (especially for Hawai'i) for giving an idea of the environment. Readers can easily see that areas of Hawai'i are very steep with lush colors. However they did fail to show the rather drab coloration of the Kona coast. Description-wise I found to be very accurate for where we visited. I wish that several places had a little more recognition in here (Huli Sue's in Waimea, the food was excellent, also the Kona Brewery, good pizza and beer). The maps are rather basic, but then Hawai'i doesn't have the road networks other places might have. As for the themed itineraries, they seemed nice if you were doing one of the themed items, but I wouldn't limit myself to what they identified. Arguably the best part of the book was the gray pages in the back. These pages give good insight for tourist on what to expect in general, what to do, and how the locals are; very important when you're the guest (in my opinion).Rating-wise this is a solid 4 star travel guide. Lots of interesting descriptions sometimes with a little opinion of their reviewer (several were humorous) making it a little more personal than other travel guides might be. While I enjoyed that, I really wish they'd included webpages for the different items. Knowing where to get a restaurant's menu or a hotel's page on line can make a big difference on if I want to go there. Also, things change between publication of travel guides and when we go and visit them. Include the webpage so people can look things up ahead of time and use the travel guide while they're traveling.

Bought this book for a week-long trip to the Big Island in July 2011. I believe a newer edition of this book is coming out in Oct. 2011, but we had to go with the older edition. Provides recommendations and ideas for a mix of different activities. Sampled a number of their restaurant recommendations and enjoyed them. Packs a lot of information in about the different parts/cities of the Big Island.

We read 6 books on the Big Island before going there (I know, a little compulsive). This one is helpful, but really the only two books you need are: Hawaii The Big Island Revealed by Andrew Doughty and Adventure Guide Hawaii The Big Island (Hunter Travel Guides) by Bryan Fryklund & Jen Reeder. The Fryklund/Reeder book is absolutely jam-packed with information. The Doughty is also packed with info and will have a few things the Fryklund book doesn't have, but it's main attribute is that it is an absolute joy to read.

This book absolutely touched my heart and soul. I was especially thrilled to read the information about Puna. I especially loved that the authors visited the Big Island and took the time to include specific details and information. I feel this book is a "must read" for anyone planning a visit to the Big Island of Hawai'i. I believe the writing to be above and beyone the average vacation guide. Mahalo!!!

This book had great maps and an easy to follow format. Information was great and was up to date. Definitely would recommend

When I received the, I thought one of most remarkable things about this book (compared to other tour books) was its compact/condensed size (5"x8"x3/4") which will easily fit in most purses but is a little large for some hip pockets. It is printed on glossy paper which could be hard to write notes on with certain pens/pencils/hi-liters and has a retail price of $19.99 which seems a little pricey for what you get. The book appears to have been printed for people with young/good eyes since many of the maps are very difficult to read without a magnifying glass due to the color combination of the small print and backgrounds. brown print on a light brown background / blue on light blue / green on light green / etc.The listings for various things in the different towns/areas leaves a lot to be desired as it lists only a portion of what's available. For example, I have stayed in a very nice hotel in the Kona area that is not listed. I think they were probably trying to keep the size of the book down but they could have listed many more than the 3 hotels in Kona by putting a chart in the book (like so many tour books do) instead of the write ups. The list of B&Bs/condos is pretty good. One of the main activities in the Kona area is deep sea fishing and they list only 4 contact phone numbers. Only 3 watering holes (bars) are listed, why? I found many more inexpensive good watering holes when I was there. In the Waimea (Kamuela) area Parker Ranch does not receive the attention it deserves. Also, Koa (expensive, popular wood only grown on Hawaii) receives very little mention --- Koa is very popular with both tourist and locals, high quality boxes and furniture are made from it.On a positive note, the book does have a lot of high quality color pictures if this is what you are looking for but I would prefer less pictures and more information.Bottom Line: I would not buy this book. This appears to be a cross between a picture souvenir book and a tour guide. I would opt instead for one that is printed on paper that is easier to mark up and had maps that were easier for old eyes to read. Also, I would like a tour book that listed more hotels in various price ranges, more activities, more options for the most popular activities (ie: deep sea fishing) in the various areas, etc.

Perfect for last minute trip planning, like we always do.We were overwhelmed by the things we could do in Alaska, but with only 8 days there, we had to have a plan.I took the broad plan from Tripdvisor forums, to go to Denali and Seward. Then for day to day planning, and for booking hostels and lodges that were not on expedia, this book was priceless. Between this book and tripdvisor reviews, you can plan your vacation really well.Once in Alaska, we planned our upcoming day over breakfast by looking at the local activities listed, and had a fabulous time right from hiking, to taking tours, to restaurants.Liked it much better than the Moon, as this had a good overview of each region, while Moon jumps into details from the start and assumes you already know what you are doing.

What we read didn't match the reality. Some descriptions of places even seemed as if the authors had never been to the place, like Chena Hot Springs, which was a real disappointment when we visited in mid-June. I have always depended on Lonely Planet when I travel, but I had to stop on this trip.

This was a great book, but when we went to Alaska in August 2016, a good amount of the restaurant information was not correct for the towns we visited (anchorage, Homer, Seward) so while it was a great book, it could definitely be improved.

I typically like Lonely Planet, but this version was oddly organized and it was very hard to locate any information. The information was also quite dated. The transportation info. could have been much better. Hotel prices listed for Anchorage were way off.

I've used these books both locally and abroad and they never disappoint! I am still planning my Alaska trip, but this book has been useful so far. Great tips and local spots.

Very helpful information for developing an plan for a trip to Alaska and deciding where to go and what to see.

Really nice book! However if there is more information about winter in Alaska, that will be great!

I love these books. I used the Ireland one and now about the use the Alaska one!

A Young People's History of the United States: Class Struggle to the War On Terror (Volume 2), by Rebecca Stefoff Howard Zinn

About the Author

The visionary historical work of professor and activist HOWARD ZINN (1922–2010) is widely considered one of the most important and influential of our era. After his experience as a bombardier in World War II, Zinn became convinced that there could no longer be such a thing as a “just war,” because the vast majority of victims in modern warfare are, increasingly, innocent civilians. In his books, including A People’s History of the United States, its companion volumeVoices of a People’s History of the United States, and countless other titles, Zinn affirms the power of the people to influence the course of events.REBECCA STEFOFF is the author of more than 100 nonfiction books for children and young adults, and she has adapted several best-selling history books for younger readers.

As this book explains at the beginning, most history books, especially textbooks, look at history from the point of view of power – kings and presidents, scientists and writers and other noteworthy names. Therefore, much of this history is about the struggle over power – wars, coups, electioneering and other means of transferring power, whether peacefully or violently. Most of these books make claims to “objectivity” without acknowledging that in fact, they are all, of necessity, biased. Writing history is a matter of what gets written and what gets left out. Who gets to tell the story and who is silenced.Howard Zinn’s THE PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, on the other hand, has no pretensions about “objectivity. Zinn states up front that he is writing the history we don’t learn in school or read in the newspapers. He is telling the history of the people who have been affected by power and the struggle for power. In the Friedman/Thatcher/Reagan vision of “trickle-down economics”, Zinn is concerned about those getting trickled on and, more importantly, what those people have done and are doing about it. The original, adult version of this book is over seven hundred pages long. Zinn, along with co-writer Rebecca Stefoff, wanted to bring a more accessible version of the book to younger audiences, hence, THE YOUNG PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, which is roughly two-thirds as long with significantly less writing per page. The young people’s version pretty much follows the adult version of the book, starting with debunking the myth of Columbus and continuing until about the date of publication, including information on the September 11 attacks, the war on terrorism and the invasion of Iraq. The book ends with the Democratic resurgence at the midterm elections during Bush 43’s second term. Although Zinn makes it repeatedly clear that he doesn’t have significantly more love for the Democrats than the Republicans, he did seem to view this as a positive sign that Americans had had enough of abuses of executive power, foreign wars and empire building and federal overreach at home. Sadly, he lived just long enough to probably realize his hopes may have been overly optimistic.Of necessity, the young people’s version is significantly less detailed and more simplistic than the adult version, which can be a bit of a drawback as it exacerbates accusations of bias and inaccuracy. As noted, Zinn never pretends to be un-biased, but the simplification in this book does away with a degree of nuance that seems to lead to a number of statements that have been simplified to the point of generalization, and generalizations almost always carry a degree of inaccuracy. As simplified as this book is, I don’t recommend it for high school students (most of whom can handle the adult version). This book would be good for late elementary and middle school kids with adult guidance. I would like to see this book used in conjunction with a supposedly “objective” text book and maybe even an explicitly right-wing focused book. It would be a slow process, but a worthwhile exercise to have students comb through equivalent chapters and look for information among the texts that is outright contradictory versus information that is simply a matter of perspective. For instance, the view of Columbus as a “great” explorer who “discovered” America isn’t necessarily incompatible with the view of him as a conqueror and slave master of the Indians – it’s just a matter of whether you look at it from a European or an Indian point of view. Students should pay attention in each text to see whose voices are included and whose are not.But other sections, such as the Civil War, may present contradictory information among the texts. For instance, was the Civil War fought over slavery or not? Who was the aggressor? In these cases, students should be helped to find primary sources which may support one position or another. In this way, students will begin to understand how we know what we know about history and to understand the limits of objective “truth” in history, which really makes up a large chunk of what studying history is really all about, rather than simply memorizing names and dates. One of the biggest drawbacks to both this version and the adult version of this book is the lack of footnotes, endnotes, bibliography or other references. Some sources are mentioned in the text itself and there are many quotes from ordinary people’s letters to the editor or elected officials or interviews with the media. But without adequate information to trace those sources for one’s self, the book suffers a small loss of credibility, even for those who support Zinn’s message and perspective. Students especially need to understand where historical information comes from and that, while it may represent an interpretation, the information underlying that interpretation comes from actual historical events as documented in many different sources.Everyone, from the most flaming radicals to the staunchest conservatives, should read Zinn’s work simply for the neglected viewpoints he offers. If his information is wrong, then it should be easy enough to dispute it, debate it and determine the truth of the matter. But no one, child or adult, is going to be “indoctrinated” simply by hearing an alternate viewpoint or different interpretation. And, while Zinn’s viewpoint is definitely quite harsh on the power structure that has frequently led America in a bad direction, the book is not itself anti-American. In fact, the book is quite optimistic in the idea that ordinary people, standing up for what they believe in, have the power to change history and thereby correct the mistakes of our imperialistic, racist, classist past to create a more equitable and just future as enshrined in our founding documents.

Using this as the foundation of my homeschool curriculum for my daughter who is in 3rd-4th grade history. We supplement with other Zinn resources like the Zinn Ed Project website and the DVD The PEOPLE SPEAK and the audio stories. Love all of these resources.

This is a great introduction to the work of Howard Zinn for youth. I do think that in some ways it is almost too truncated, but that is because we are using it as a resource in our homeschooling history studies. I am supplementing with other resources, and we like it as a jumping off point for more investigation, research, and discussion.

Great read! It has changed my perception of the US government, military and our society. The book discusses important insight of American history that wasn't taught in high school.

Having read the grown-up version of this book, I read this on a flight using my Kindle. It is very readable, and true to the original, though geared to a younger audience. Zinn should be required reading in all history and social science programs.

I got this book for my daughter as required reading assignment. I don’t know what’s going on with this brainwashing of kids by liberal teachers but I told my daughter to just get an F and I explained the opinion views in this book isn’t history. What a waste of money.

Excellent read for your high school or college age child! All adults will appreciate the book.

A great view of the history of the United States - an alternative to the usual view.

This book , 2 years back , felt like a god send and showed me what I needed for myself as a partner of an SA for decades and what I needed from my husband . It has taken time for both . Still, if I gave away all the rest of my books , I will always keep this one . Currently it is my guide to formulate what I need in the Disclosure process. I have noticed some CSAT's don't seem to have faith in MM's approach but I trust the man and what he is saying to both the SA and partner. I am so grateful for MM's work in this book as well as the CD set for partners, "I Must Heal". Thank you Milton Magness for the depth of your commitment to the healing of those of us who are dealing with this addiction and the impact on the family.

A seemingly rare & valuable resource for married & committed couples up against the horrors of sex addiction. As the partner of an addict, I will be keeping this one handy.

He is right on about sex addiction. I do wish there were a little more Christ centered content. The end

Good insight into this addiction. Goes along with what other people have said. Was nice to share experiences and stories from families of addicts to know what to expect.

Very useful

this book really helped my Sa partner, and the workbook that goes with it did not overwhelm him- he shared it with all his recovery friends- and worked on it every night- I was so surprised

This book helped me see better my addict self BUT most important helped me really see the trauma I had caused my wife and what I should do to hold her pain. We are both doing well in our individual recovery and healing and our relationship is starting to get much better.

An excellent primer on sex addiction for both the addict and spouse. Written in a very user friendly style. Not much detail on any one topic but a good starting point and a lot of good resources in the appendix!
